Frostpunk 1886 Announced by 11 bit studios

11 bit studios has officially announced Frostpunk 1886, a new entry in the Frostpunk series that revisits and expands upon the original title’s foundations using Unreal Engine. Scheduled for release in 2027, this reimagining is not a remake, but a reinvention that introduces new mechanics, systems, and narrative paths while honoring the themes that defined the original.

The move away from the studio’s previous Liquid Engine—used in both Frostpunk and This War of Mine—signals a technical leap forward. Unreal Engine will enable long-requested features such as mod support and future expandability, opening the door to community-driven content and additional DLC down the line.

Set during a critical moment in the Frostpunk timeline, the arrival of the Great Storm in 1886, the game aims to provide a fresh experience even for veteran players. A new Purpose path will offer different ways to govern and shape the fate of New London, expanding the moral and strategic challenges at the heart of the franchise.

While Frostpunk 2 continues its own development with major content updates, DLC, and an upcoming console release, Frostpunk 1886 will offer a parallel experience rooted in the legacy of the first game. Both titles will move forward simultaneously, each representing a different vision of survival in a frozen world.

Development of Frostpunk 1886 began earlier this year, and more details will be shared in the coming months.
