PlayStation just announced a release date for Ghost of Yōtei, the next game from Ghost of Tsushima developer Sucker Punch. The highly anticipated title launches October 2, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5. The news came alongside a new story trailer, “The Onryō’s List.” It offers a closer look at the game’s setting, lead character, and overall tone.
The story is set in Ezo, known today as Hokkaido. Ghost of Yōtei follows Atsu, a woman seeking revenge against a gang called the Yōtei Six. While the story isn’t connected to Jin Sakai’s journey, this is Sucker Punch’s first major release since Ghost of Tsushima. It builds on that open-world formula in new ways.
Pre-orders open May 2 and include early bonuses across all editions. A Collector’s Edition was also revealed, featuring a replica mask, sash, and other physical extras. Here’s a closer look at Atsu’s journey, the game’s world, and what sets Ghost of Yōtei apart.
Atsu’s Story and the Yōtei Six
In Ghost of Yōtei, you play as Atsu, a woman with one goal—track down the Yōtei Six and make them pay. Sixteen years ago, they burned her home, killed her family, and left her pinned to a tree with her own sword. She lived. And now she’s back.
Armed with that same katana, Atsu returns to her homeland with a list: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito. Each one is part of the gang that took everything from her. But while the story starts with revenge, it won’t stay that simple. The trailer hints that Atsu’s journey will change as she meets new people. Along the way, she starts to find a new sense of purpose.
Even though this isn’t a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, it’s aiming for that same emotional weight. It just approaches it through a very different lens.
Exploration, Freedom, and New Gameplay Systems
Like Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is built around an open world. Though, this time, there’s more freedom in how you tackle things. You decide which member of the Yōtei Six to hunt down first. The order you choose shapes how your story unfolds.
You’re not just tracking the six names, either. Atsu can take on bounties, seek out weapon masters to learn new skills, and discover side paths while traveling through Ezo. It sounds like there’s a mix of structured missions and open-ended exploration, with plenty of space to just wander.
A new gameplay mechanic also lets you glimpse Atsu’s memories during the journey, giving more insight into her past and what was taken from her. It’s a personal touch that adds more weight to the story and helps tie her quest together with the world around her.
The world itself also seems more reactive. You can set up camp anywhere to rest, and the trailer teases both peaceful moments and dangerous encounters scattered throughout the wilds of Ezo.
Ghost of Yōtei Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses
Pre-orders for Ghost of Yōtei go live on May 2, and you’ll have a few options to choose from. No matter which version you get, all pre-orders include a unique in-game mask and a set of seven PSN avatars featuring Atsu and the Yōtei Six. If you pre-order through PlayStation Store, the avatars unlock immediately.
The Standard Edition is priced at $69.99 USD. You’ll also find a Digital Deluxe Edition for $79.99, which includes extra in-game items like The Snake’s armor set, an alternate armor dye, a special horse and saddle, an in-game Charm, a gold Sword Kit, and early access to Traveler’s Maps that help you find upgrade locations.
There’s also a Collector’s Edition, which packs in all the above along with a full-size replica of Atsu’s mask, her sash with the Yōtei Six’s names, a katana guard display piece, coins for an in-game mini-game, and more.
Looking Ahead to October
Ghost of Yōtei is shaping up to be a big release for Sucker Punch and a major follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, even without a direct story connection. Between its revenge-driven premise, expanded open-world structure, and new gameplay mechanics, it looks like a game that builds on what came before while pushing in new directions.
With the release set for October 2 and pre-orders opening soon, we’ll likely be seeing more gameplay and details over the next few months. For now, the trailer gives us a solid preview of what to expect—new characters, dangerous targets, and a world that seems just as beautiful as it is hostile.
