Netflix Games has a slew of video games from various developers, but how do you pitch a game to Netflix? We have some information thanks to an interview by Jamie Brayshaw at GamesIndustry.biz with the studio head at Liverpool UK-based Ripstone Ltd, who developed Netflix Games The Queen’s Gambit Chess. You can read the source for this article here.
How Did Ripstone Do It?
Let’s start by going over how Jamie was able to get Netflix to have a conversation with him about making a game based on The Queen’s Gambit of all things. Mr. Brayshaw is a fan of the widely successful miniseries The Queen’s Gambit, and his studio Ripstone Ltd. has strong expertise in making chess games, so he merely emailed Netflix and asked to set up a call so he could pitch some ideas such as DLC for Chess Ultra or even a VR game. Then on the call, Mr. Brayshaw said:
Lots of platforms say they’re the Netflix of games, but what about you/ You’re actually Netflix, when are you going to be the Netflix of games?
Jamie Brayshaw Heado of Ripstone Ltd’s Opening Pitch To Netflix
The good news is Netflix was already preparing their push into the video game market at the time and, after showing what it would look like to Mr. Brayshaw, Netflix agreed to give him a week to come up with a pitch for the game he was making. After getting the pitch through to Netflix and getting the game greenlit, Ripstone made sure to include minigames and challenges in this game, as well as Beth Harmon, who is the lead of the television series.
This is an incredible story of how a small game studio got the attention of a large-scale company like Netflix and it is an amazing story. You can check out the original interview here.
