Antstream Arcade is the retro gaming cloud gaming platform offering over 1300 video games from the 1970s through the 1990s as well as modern-day homebrew titles. However, some games are listed multiple times on Antstream. So, I wanted to explain why this is the case and how Antstream can better organize games with multiple titles.
Why Do Some Games Have Multiple Versions On Antstream Arcade?
Why are there multiple versions of games on Antstream, and what are some of the games with multiple versions? To answer the second question, some notable games with multiple versions include Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe, Asteroids, Crystal Castles, and Speedball.
The reason for the multiple versions is a little more complex because Antstream Arcade positions itself as a gaming platform focused on the preservation of classic videogames. With there being many game consoles, gaming handhelds, arcade games, and microcomputers that were released between 1972 and 1999, there are quite a few games that appear across multiple platforms. And, in most cases, the games have different features or even run at different speeds among the versions.
How Can Antstream Avoid Confusion With Different Versions?
The duplicate games in the catalog can be a bit confusing. It looks a little messy and it isn’t always clear what the differences are. How can Antstream better organize games on its platform that have multiple versions? Antstream currently has a little label on each game on the site that says what version it is However, I feel like it would have been simpler if Antstream instead had one page for those games that says “multiple versions available.” Then, when you go into the game’s page it could let you pick a version and show you a screenshot of what the version looks like. I feel like that would also stop any assumptions that Antstream Arcade is “inflating the numbers” when it comes to how many games are on its platform.
This is a small suggestion, but I think it could make a significant quality of life improvement for Antstream’s users.
