Earlier this month we found out Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered opted into GeForce NOW. Now, Aspyr have revealed more exciting new details about the highly anticipated game Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered. The remastered editions will include improved character models for a more detailed visual experience. A revamped map system, designed with help from Crystal Dynamics and the game’s community, will also be included.

Let’s take a look and break down all the new information, leading up to the December 10, 2024 launch.

Remastered Bosses: What’s New?

The remastered versions bring a fresh look to some of the most memorable boss battles from both Soul Reaver titles. These updates not only focus on enhancing textures and visuals but also on staying true to the gritty, dark world of Nosgoth. Each boss has been overhauled to capture the original essence while embracing modern graphical improvements.

Melchiah, one of Kain’s first lieutenants, has received a complete makeover, with darker skin and slimier textures. His skeletal structure is more realistic. And, his eyes have been adjusted to match the eerie vibe of the original game.

In the dark, eerie setting from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered, Melchiah, a terrifying creature with multiple distorted heads and glowing red eyes lurks.

Meanwhile, Rahab’s skin colour is a little more gray. His vampiric fangs and reddish eyes make him look more menacing than ever. Dumah’s armour is now a lot dirtier and has patches of mold and blood all over it. Kain has received a complete overhaul, particularly in Soul Reaver 1, where his original model lacked detail. The remastered version of Kain aligns much closer to the look seen in the original game’s FMV cinematic cutscenes.

Other notable bosses, such as Zephon and Rahab, have also been revamped. Zephon’s face has been repainted, giving him a more insect-like appearance, fitting the dilapidated cathedral where you confront him.

New Map and Compass System

Are you a fan of the original Soul Reaver games? If so, you’ll remember how hard it was making your way through the twisting world of Nosgoth. To make things easier, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1 & 2 Remastered introduces a new map and compass system. This is designed to help you explore the world more smoothly without losing the original game’s sense of adventure. The compass offers subtle hints on where to go next. And, the map acts as a reference tool to avoid hand-holding.

For purists, there is an option to turn off the compass if you want to navigate the game world just like in the original. Collectible tracking has been added to make sure you can easily find all Health and Energy power-ups. Aspyr is working closely with Crystal Dynamics to ensure that the map art is a faithful representation of Nosgoth, drawing from original designs and community feedback.
