Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is a fun game that brings back the unique charm of the original. Developed and published by Dragami Games. The original game was made by Goichi “Suda51” Suda and filmmaker James Gunn. It became popular for its crazy humour and one-of-a-kind style.

This remaster not only improves the graphics but also includes new content and features. These additions make the game feel new and exciting. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the original or a newcomer curious about the hype, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is a mix of laughter and adrenaline.

Join me as we dive into a world where chainsaws and cheerleading go hand in hand. Does Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP still have the charm as the original? Let’s find out!

A Cheerleader’s Zombie Adventure

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP tells a funny and wild story about Juliet Starling, a cheerleader with a secret life as a zombie slayer. On her 18th birthday, everything goes wrong when a zombie outbreak hits her town. Her boyfriend Nick becomes a talking head, and Juliet has to battle through crowds of undead to save the day.

The story unfolds as Juliet teams up with her quirky family to uncover the cause of the zombie invasion. Each character you meet adds to the absurdity of the plot, making for some laugh-out-loud moments. The dialogue is filled with cheesy one-liners and pop culture references that keep the tone light and entertaining. While the story is packed with humour, it sometimes lacks the emotional depth you might expect from a James Gunn project.

Despite its silly premise, the game does attempt to create moments that tug at your heartstrings. However, these attempts can feel sudden and out of place. The focus remains on the action and comedy, which is what fans of the original game loved. Overall, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP offers a fun and wild story that keeps you entertained as you cut through zombies. It’s a ride filled with laughter, gore, and plenty of campy charm.

Juliet’s Zombie-Slaying Skills

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP offers a mix of stylish combat and quirky fun. The game is divided into seven stages, each with its own unique look and challenges. Juliet’s combat style combines cheerleading moves with chainsaw attacks.

The cheer moves help stun enemies and build up combos, while the chainsaw is your main weapon for taking them down. This mix keeps the combat fresh and exciting. However, some minigames, like Zombie Basketball, can feel like unnecessary distractions that slow down the action.

One of the new features in Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is the improved upgrade system. You can unlock powerful moves and cosmetics, which adds depth to the gameplay. Additional new gameplay features in RePOP include a refined combat system with improved camera angles.

It also features an auto mode for Quick Time Events, simplifying complex interactions. Additionally, Juliet’s Room acts as a gallery, offering new hair colours, artwork, and collectibles to unlock. A “RePOP Mode” presents a less violent pop art style for damage effects.

Despite its fun mechanics, some aspects of the gameplay show their age. The stage design can feel repetitive, and boss fights often lack challenge. I also feel that gameplay itself is slower than the original. I encountered noticeable differences in attack speed and enemy behaviour. And, I encountered instances when using the chainsaw dash would not break objects, which it did in the original game, which is disappointing.

A Colourful Chaos of Humour and Horror

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP brings a colourful and chaotic world to life. The game features a unique art style that blends cartoonish visuals with a dark, humorous theme. The character models and textures are more detailed than in the original. The lighting and shadows have improved, making the environments brighter and more appealing. However, some elements, such as the textures of the zombies and NPCs, appear muddy and less refined. Additionally, I encountered bugs such as Juliet’s character model vibrating and freezing while playing.

The game’s tone is playful and campy, filled with over-the-top violence and crude humour. This style is consistent throughout, making it clear that the developers embraced the absurdity of the story. The dialogue is often filled with vulgar jokes and pop culture references, which can be entertaining or off-putting, depending on your taste.

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP features strong voice acting that brings the characters to life. The cast delivers their lines with enthusiasm, adding to the game’s humour. Surprisingly, the soundtrack is missing some licensed music from the original game.

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Is Sure to Entertain Fans and Newcomers Alike

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP attempts to bring back the wild fun of the original game while updating some key features. The combat system is enjoyable, allowing you to mix cheerleading moves with chainsaw attacks. However, the game does have its flaws, such as lengthy stages and some repetitive minigames that can slow down the action. The boss fights also leave something to be desired, lacking the challenge you might expect.

Visually, the remaster improves character models and lighting but sometimes struggles with inconsistent textures. While the humour and campy style shine through, I miss the emotional depth often found in James Gunn’s work. Still, the game delivers plenty of laughs and over-the-top moments that keep the experience light-hearted.

Overall, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is a mixed bag of fun and frustration. If you enjoyed Lollipop Chainsaw or are looking for a quirky action title, this remaster at the time of writing this review is a bit disappointing. It’s got uneven pacing, a few outdated mechanics and some bugs. Personally, I’d wait for an update to come out that fixes these issues before buying. However, if you are a hardcore fan and can’t wait, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is still an entertaining adventure.

Summary

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP aims to recapture the fun of the original game but falls short in several areas. Some gameplay elements feel outdated, with repetitive stages and lackluster boss fights. The visuals have improved, but issues like inconsistent textures and bugs, such as character models vibrating or freezing, detract from the experience. While RePOP offers laughs and a quirky style, you are best to wait for an update to be released to fix these issues before diving in.
