PlayStation 5’s lead architect Mark Cerny has met with Digital Foundry to discuss the PlayStation 5 Pro which released last November and has already received several updates to it’s upscaling technology PSSR.
Part of this interview, they’ve discussed the joint venture PlayStation has debuted with AMD called Project Amethyst. This project aims to share resources between PlayStation and AMD to develop Machine Learning technologies that will benefit gaming first and foremost.
As part of this collaboration, AMD has recently launched their newest GPU, the RX 9070 XT, which is being seen as one of their best graphics card in a long time. AMD has credited PlayStation for their contribution in the development of FSR 4, their latest upscaling technology which goes head to head with DLSS, Nvidia’s upscaling ML model which had been facing little to no competition to this day.
During his conversation with DF, Cerny has confirmed that AMD’s latest upscaler advances to the neural network would be integrated into PSSR, and that we will see games using this new model as early as 2026.
He also discussed the long term goal of this collaboration, “to work together to create a more ideal hardware architecture for machine learning, something capable of processing the neural networks needed for game graphics at high speed.”
The collaboration between PlayStation and AMD seems to have been a success, with multiple titles showing significant performance improvements using PSSR, including the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows that will deliver console exclusive extended ray tracing on the PS5 Pro.
In the future, we could see PlayStation use PSSR to enhance the quality of cloud gaming like what we have seen Nvidia achieve with GFN.
