Metal Slug Tactics – Game Review

Metal Slug Tactics is a new twist on the classic Metal Slug series, developed by Leikir Studio and published by Dotemu. The Metal Slug franchise has been around since the mid-1990s, known for its challenging gameplay and detailed pixel art. This game takes the familiar run-and-gun action you know and love and transforms it into a tactical, turn-based experience.

Gamers have enjoyed numerous entries in the series over the years, but Metal Slug Tactics marks a significant shift in style. This game also introduces roguelite elements, meaning each run can be different from the last. So, if you’re ready for a blend of strategy and action, join me as we take a look at why Metal Slug Tactics is refreshing welcome addition to the series.

A Classic Rivalry Reignited

Leikir Studio does a good job of balancing Metal Slug Tactics’ story with gameplay. It feels like a classic Metal Slug experience, where the action takes centre stage. The story of Metal Slug Tactics picks up where the classic run and gun games left off. You find yourself in a world where General Morden is back, plotting his revenge.

After being defeated in previous battles, he has gathered new allies and is ready to cause chaos again. Your mission is to lead the Peregrine Falcon Squad to stop him and restore peace. The main characters are familiar faces from the series, including Marco, Eri, and Fio. Each character brings unique skills to the battlefield, making your squad feel diverse and dynamic. As you progress, you unlock additional characters to join your team.

While the story isn’t overly complex, it serves its purpose. The game doesn’t drown you in lengthy cutscenes or heavy dialogue, which I really like. Instead, it keeps things light and fun, focusing on the action.

Tactical Strategy Meets Classic Action

Metal Slug Tactics offers a unique blend of tactical gameplay and the classic run-and-gun action the series is known for. Each mission places you in an isometric battlefield, where you control your squad of characters. You can pick and choose your squad, allowing you to experiment with different strategies.

The game features a variety of objectives, from eliminating enemies to escorting NPCs. Though, some objectives do start to feel repetitive over time. One of my favourite gameplay features is Metal Slug Tactics’ roguelite element. Each run begins with a randomly selected map and character loadouts. This randomness means you’ll never quite know what to expect, making every playthrough feel unique.

Metal Slug Tactics encourages you to adapt your tactics based on the challenges you face. And, because of this, I found myself constantly experimenting with different strategies. Sometimes, I would focus on offense, while other times, I’d prioritize defense. While the missions are generally short, they can be intense. A word to the wise, make sure to manage your health carefully. One wrong move can lead to defeat.

Overall, I found Metal Slug Tactics gameplay to be refreshing. It successfully combines the thrill of the original run and gun games with a new tactical approach that feels rewarding and fun. It’s just what the series needed.

The Aesthetic Appeal of Tactical Warfare

Metal Slug Tactics brings the classic series to life with beautiful pixel graphics, keeping true to the series roots. You can see the care that went into creating this world. Each character and environment is well designed, making every battle feel like a piece of art.

Leikir Studio’s attention to detail, such as small character animations, add personality to each character. For example, when Marco takes cover, he crouches in a way that feels both natural and humorous. It’s these little touches that make the game feel alive and engaging.

The game’s soundtrack captures the spirit of the original Metal Slug games while adding a modern twist. Each track fits perfectly with the action, keeping your adrenaline pumping during intense moments on the battlefield. The developers did a great job in creating an experience that respects the Metal Slug legacy while bringing something new to the table. And, for that, I commend them!

In Metal Slug Tactics, soldiers maneuver strategically on a grid map, navigating through ruins and forests all bordered by shimmering waters.

Metal Slug Tactics Successfully Captures the Spirit of the Series While Introducing Fresh New Gameplay Mechanics

Metal Slug Tactics is a fun and exciting twist on a classic series. It successfully combines the fast-paced action of the original games with tactical gameplay. The pixel art is beautifully done, capturing the charm of the original series. Each character feels unique, and their abilities add depth to the gameplay.

Mission variety could use some improvement, as some objectives start to feel repetitive over time. Despite this, Metal Slug Tactics still offers plenty of replay value. Trust me when I tell you, the game’s roguelite elements will keep you coming back for more.

In the end, I feel that Metal Slug Tactics is a solid and worthy addition to the franchise. It may not be perfect, but it captures the spirit of the series while introducing new gameplay mechanics. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the series, there’s a lot to enjoy here. If you’re looking for a game that mixes strategy with a touch of nostalgia, this one is worth checking out.
