Microsoft’s Evolving Xbox UI Hints at PC Integration, But Cloud Streaming Remains Unclear

Microsoft is signalling a significant shift in its Xbox ecosystem, potentially bringing a more unified, console-like experience to handhelds and PCs. As reported by Tom Warren in The Verge, Microsoft briefly showcased a new Xbox UI across various devices, including a tablet and handheld, which notably listed Steam games. This glimpse came as Microsoft discussed “opening a billion doors” for Xbox.

The image, quickly removed after The Verge’s inquiry, depicted a revamped Xbox UI on a TV, tablet, and handheld, all displaying the Steam label alongside other game listings. While the image appears to be a mock-up and contained some inconsistencies, such as repeated tabs, sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans suggest the Steam mention isn’t accidental. They indicate that Microsoft is developing an Xbox app update that aims to display all PC games installed, regardless of their launcher, including Steam and the Epic Games Store.

This potential integration of Steam and other PC storefronts within the Xbox app aligns with Microsoft’s ambition to make the app a central hub for PC gaming, similar to GOG’s approach. Xbox chief Phil Spencer has also previously hinted at the possibility of PC stores like Epic Games Store and Itch.io eventually coming to Xbox consoles.

What about cloud gaming?

However, it’s crucial to note that at this time, there is no indication that this integration extends to cloud streaming Steam games. While the updated Xbox UI suggests a unified library experience, mirroring GFN’s approach, Microsoft has yet to confirm any plans for cloud streaming of these integrated PC libraries. Therefore, the question of whether this marks a step towards streaming Steam games via Xbox Cloud Gaming remains unanswered.

Although the UI hints at a future where users manage all their games within the Xbox ecosystem, the inclusion of cloud streaming is still speculative. We will keep our eyes on this, providing updates as Microsoft’s plans evolve and any potential expansion of cloud streaming becomes apparent.
