The Verge published more exclusive news about Xbox Cloud Gaming today. The article is a great read about the history of Xbox’s cloud ambitions, and we definitely recommend checking it out. However, what most caught our attention is the news that (along with Xbox bringing games you own to Xcloud next month) there are more improvements coming to Xcloud.
According the article the following other improvements are coming:
- Higher bitrates (when internet connections allow) for clearer/higher-fidelity streamed video
- Direct to cloud controllers
The current lack of higher bitrates is one of the most complained about qualities about Xbox Cloud Gaming at the moment. Xcloud typically maxes out around 15 mbps even on gigabit fiber connections. Whereas services like GeForce NOW will deliver above 75 mbps (nearing 100 mbps at times). That means the GFN streams are significantly higher quality for people with capable internet connections. So, it is nice to see Xbox beginning to raise their bitrates.
We have had recent confirmation that the direct-to-cloud controller was still in the works as recently as August. It showed up in code on the Xbox cloud gaming website.
One sorta embarrassing limitation of Xbox Cloud Gaming at the moment is the inability to play local multiplayer titles with two local controllers. There is no mention of this getting addressed in The Verge article. However, we hope it gets fixed sooner rather than later as well.
