Netflix has been adding games to its mobile app since September 2021 and from what little we knew at the time, the games didn’t set the world on fire. Now, however, thanks to a recent report from TechCrunch we know the popularity has increased for select Netflix Games, and it’s a massive increase!
The Numbers Are 180% Higher Than 2022
According to the TechCrunch report, which sources data from Sensor Tower, Netflix Games downloads across the Google Play Store and Apple App Store jumped up 180% to 81.2 million downloads by the end of 2023. The fourth quarter of 2023 makes up 53% of that 180% on its own, which is largely attributed to the launch of Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy Definitive Edition in mid-December. According to the Sensor Tower data, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is now the most downloaded Netflix game of all time, with Grand Theft Auto Vice City in sixth place and Grand Theft Auto 3 in eleventh place. It has also been reported that within a week, the three Grand Theft Auto games made up a total of 6.4 million downloads.
For those wondering about the 180% increase in downloads to Netflix’s game library in 2023, 17% was the percentage obtained by the trio of Grand Theft Auto games. We also discovered that due to the timing of the release of the Grand Theft Auto games, Storyteller was the most downloaded game in December 2023 which beat out Grand Theft Auto San Andreas by about 500,000 downloads at the time. We also learned that 10% of the downloads Netflix Games received were for Storyteller and that the top three most popular genres were “Action”, “Lifestyle” and “Puzzle” games.
Netflix Games Isn’t Stopping At 81.2 Million Downloads
Whilst those numbers are already very good and show us that Netflix Games is starting to capture the attention of the general Netflix subscriber, we also have some big games coming to Netflix in 2024 including Sonic Mania and the first two games in the Monument Valley series, which I think will help Netflix continue to attract more gamers to their platform.
We also know that, in the second half of 2023, Netflix started beta testing their cloud gaming platform in the UK, US, and Canada. So hopefully, we will see that beta roll out to more countries this year too.
