Netflix Games is the gaming platform within the Netflix mobile platform, and today we have news that six games have been canceled from releasing on the platform. The games in question include Don’t Starve Together and Tales of the Shire. Let’s go over these games and what’s going on with Netflix Games.
So What Games Were Cancelled?
So what Netflix titles were canceled and what was Netflix’s reasoning? Well, Netflix has canceled Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, Crashlands 2, and three titles from Klei Entertainment, which included Rotwood, Lab Rat, and Don’t Starve Together, as well as the Netflix-owned Compass Point West.
Now, the reasoning for these cancellations comes down to Netflix trying to “optimize its game portfolio.” This is what game executives say when they mean cutting projects that they don’t think will appeal to its players. It’s also noteworthy to mention that, despite being on Netflix Games as a beta in select regions, Placid Plastic Duck has been confirmed not to be getting a full release on Netflix Games.
The two most disappointing cancellations to me are the games from indie game developer Klei Entertainment as well as Compass Point West – especially as a Netflix-owned studio develops the latter game. Placid Plastic Duck is also a rather disappointing cancellation especially as it received a beta release on the platform only to wind up being cancelled before full release. Netflix has promised more games based on their popular IPs. However, if they are going to keep cutting other games in order to develop IP-driven games I feel rather disappointed.
