Earlier this year Netflix Games’ then-CEO Mike Verdu announced he was moving into a new role at Netflix’s gaming division. This has led to the transition of the CEO of Netflix Games title to Epic Games veteran Alain Tascan.
What Is Mike Verdu’s New Netflix Role?:
Today, November 4th we have confirmation of Mike Verdu’s new role at Netflix Games, Vice President of Generative AI for Games. When asked about his thoughts on Generative AI in video games he said:
“Many view this technology with fear, but I am a game-maker at heart and I see its potential to unlock all of us, to create mind-blowing new experiences for players, to lift us to new heights.”
This announcement came only a few days after Netflix shuttered its internal game studio in California, which was designed to work on AAA game titles. At a time when the gaming industry is in a turbulent position, with hundreds of studios and publishers shuttering or having to lay off a lot of devs, this is a huge concern. I also hope that Netflix didn’t close its Californian studio because they thought using generative AI would allow them to make games faster and cheaper.
