Netflix has reportedly held talks with Take-Two Interactive about licensing a game in the popular Grand Theft Auto series as Netflix makes moves to offer triple AAA video games on its gaming service.
The report comes from the Wall Street Journal, which states that Netflix believes that a move such as this will give their service a bigger presence in the video game space and in turn lead to more subscribers. It also reports that although downloads of Netflix Games have increased to 70.5m, less than 1% of Netflix’s subscriber base is using its games on a daily basis.
Netflix has of course made moves recently into cloud gaming and is actively trialing this feature. However, the failure of Google Stadia has apparently been the hot topic at internal discussions with Netflix, where some employees have reportedly questioned why the streaming service is venturing into territory where a tech giant such as Google has failed.
Why Is This A Big Deal?
So why is this a big deal for Netflix fans and gamers alike? Well “Grand Theft Auto” is one of the most well-known and best-selling gaming franchises ever. There’s also the fact that Netflix has almost 240 million paying customers worldwide which might convince Take-Two and Rockstar executives to make a deal to offer a “GTA” game (the report doesn’t specify if it’s GTA 6). The legacy of Google Stadia also hangs over Netflix Games as the “GTA” series is a franchise that never hit Google’s platform, so if Netflix can score a game in the “GTA” franchise it will make Netflix Games a big deal to a lot of gamers.
