Bandai Namco revealed a new trailer for Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree during its Bandai Namco Summer Showcase 2025, spotlighting two of the game’s eight playable characters: Rekka and Nishiki. The trailer is the first in a four-part “Guardian Trailer” series that will run throughout the summer.
Rekka is a fiery sword-wielding samurai and founding master of the Eternal Flame Dojo. Despite her skills, she’s known for being clumsy in everyday life. Nishiki, on the other hand, is a muscular humanoid koi fish with a spiritual outlook and fast-paced, combo-heavy combat. The twist? He can’t swim.
How the Dungeon-Crawling Gameplay Works
The game’s roguelite structure sends you into dungeons with two Guardians at a time. One wields the sacred sword Tsurugi, the other the magical staff Kagura. Choosing the right pair is key to survival, with each Guardian offering unique moves, upgrades, and combat styles. Each Guardian has distinct abilities tied to their weapon type. Skills unlock during dungeon runs and through upgrades in the evolving hub village. You’ll also collect materials to forge and improve swords, adding more options to your preferred playstyle.
Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree features hand-drawn 2D visuals, isometric dungeon crawling, and an evolving hub village that changes across timelines. You’ll meet new characters, craft upgrades, and slowly piece together the story behind the evil force known as Magatsu.
The trailer was introduced by producer Daisuke Nagaoka and marks the first entry in the four-part Guardian Trailer Series. Alongside the reveal, Bandai Namco also launched a US-only coloring contest, with the grand prize being a custom Towa-themed gaming PC.
The game is being developed by Brownies Inc. and launches September 19, 2025, on Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
