Hello Games has released Relics today, a new update for No Man’s Sky available for free to all players on PC, consoles, and VR. This expansion follows the Worlds Part II update from January, which introduced visual and gameplay improvements, and brings a brand-new mechanic focused on space paleontology.
From now on, players will be able to uncover fossilized remains of ancient alien creatures buried beneath planetary surfaces. Previously, the game’s destructible terrain allowed players to dig for buried technologies and valuable items, but with Relics, this experience evolves with a wide variety of prehistoric bones to discover and collect. Players can reassemble these remains to build unique skeletons, display them in bases transformed into museums, or share them with fellow explorers.
Like other lifeforms in No Man’s Sky, fossils will have different levels of rarity, with the most exceptional discoveries being tradable at space stations for valuable rewards. To encourage this new mechanic, Hello Games has announced a special community expedition focused on finding the rarest remains.
However, excavation will not be without danger. In addition to Sentinels patrolling the surface and beasts guarding their eggs, players must also beware of guardian creatures, which can awaken from their ancient sleep to defend their treasures.
