Overwatch Revisits Nostalgia with Limited-Time Overwatch: Classic Event

Overwatch Classic

Blizzard has announced the launch of a new series of limited-time events for Overwatch 2, known as Overwatch: Classic. This nostalgic mode aims to let players revisit the game’s early years, allowing fans to experience original heroes, maps, and gameplay mechanics from the game’s 2016 launch and subsequent updates. The events, running from November 12 to December 2, will feature iconic 6v6 gameplay alongside some classic mechanics and abilities that defined the early Overwatch experience.

Classic Overwatch Gameplay

Each event in Overwatch: Classic will highlight specific balance states and metas from the game’s history. The first event will focus on the 1.0 patch from May 2016, featuring the original 21 heroes and 12 maps across game modes like Assault, Escort, Hybrid, and Control. Notably, this iteration reintroduces some retired mechanics, such as Hanzo’s Scatter Arrow and Mercy’s team-wide Resurrect Ultimate.

Heroes and Map Selection

The classic hero roster is divided into four classes as they were at launch: Offense, Defense, Tank, and Support. Players can experience early Overwatch strategy, such as the no-hero-limit option available initially, where teams can stack multiple heroes in a single match. Key maps from the original release, including Temple of Anubis, King’s Row, and Watchpoint: Gibraltar, will also make a return, although some have received updates for Overwatch 2. Players will need to rely on familiar strategies, as these maps retain their classic layouts.

Missing Some Legacy Features

While Overwatch: Classic brings back many of the game’s beloved mechanics, it excludes legacy features such as loot boxes, the original UI, and Competitive mode. Players will use only the original default skins during the event, reinforcing the nostalgic feel.

Blizzard noted that Overwatch: Classic will not replace ongoing plans for broader 6v6 tests in future seasons, which will be separate from this event. Feedback from players on these classic events may influence future content, though it remains unclear if Overwatch: Classic will return after its current run.
