Just a few days ago, PlayStation announced the price of PlayStation Plus will go up in certain countries, and today they have announced a regional price increase for the PlayStation 5. This price increase on the hardware will affect multiple markets across Europe, the Middle East, Africa (EMEA), Australia, and New Zealand. The new prices take effect starting April 14, 2025, and applies primarily to the PS5 Digital Edition. Meanwhile, the price of the removable Disc Drive for PS5 will see a price cut in the same regions.
In a statement posted to the official PlayStation Blog, Sony cited “a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates” as the reason for the adjustments.
New PS5 Pricing by Region
The updated pricing focuses primarily on the PS5 Digital Edition, with some changes also affecting the Standard PS5 in Australia and New Zealand. Here’s how prices are changing across each region:
Europe
- PS5 Digital Edition: €499.99
- (No change to the Standard PS5 with disc drive)
United Kingdom
- PS5 Digital Edition: £429.99
- (No change to the Standard PS5 with disc drive)
Australia
- PS5 Digital Edition: AUD $749.95
- Standard PS5 with disc drive: AUD $829.95
New Zealand
- PS5 Digital Edition: NZD $859.95
- Standard PS5 with disc drive: NZD $949.95
Sony confirmed that PS5 Pro pricing remains unchanged. Select other EMEA markets may also see similar changes, depending on local conditions.
Disc Drive Price Decreased in All Affected Regions
While PS5 console prices are going up in many markets, Sony is reducing the price of the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 in the same regions. The price drop also takes effect on April 14, 2025, and applies to the detachable disc drive used with the PS5 Digital Edition.
Here are the updated Disc Drive prices:
Europe
- €79.99
United Kingdom
- £69.99
Australia
- AUD $124.95
New Zealand
- NZD $139.95
This adjustment follows the introduction of the modular PS5 design, which allows users to purchase the Digital Edition and add a disc drive separately if needed.
A Regional Adjustment Amid Global Economic Pressures
Sony’s decision to raise PS5 prices comes amid continued economic challenges, including inflation and currency fluctuations across key markets. While the increase may disappoint some, the company’s choice to reduce the cost of the Disc Drive offers a bit of flexibility for Digital Edition owners.
These changes do not affect pricing in North America or Asia at this time, and Sony notes that further details may vary by local retailers. Pricing for the PS5 Pro also remains unchanged.
