PlayStation Cloud Gaming Picks Up a Handful of Purchaseble PS5 Titles – Black Myth: Wukong and Astrobot

New PS5 Cloud Games - Black Myth Wukong and Astro Bot

Next month, Xbox Cloud Gaming is expanding to allow users to play games they’ve purchased outright in the Xbox store via the cloud. Sony doesn’t want you to forget that they had this feature first – kinda/sorta anyway.

A year ago now, in the fall of 2023, Sony began streaming games from PS5 cloud hardware. The service is available to PS Plus Premium subscribers. If you are a Premium subscriber with a PS5 device, you may stream most free PS Plus games from the cloud (including PS5 games that are part of the PS Plus subscription).

A new feature that was introduced at the time was the ability to also stream select PS5 games that you have purchased outright (via the PlayStation Store), even if they are not part of the PS Plus games collection. Notable titles that got cloud gaming support included Hogwarts Legacy and Cyberpunk 2077.

But there is a major limitation! For over a year now, this ability to stream PS5 games from the cloud has been restricted to actual PS5 devices. Unfortunately, this defeats most of the purpose of the capability! For now, you can’t even stream games from the cloud to Sony’s own PlayStation Portal. We continue to hold out hope this arrives in the future.

Given the relatively few places you can use PlayStation Cloud Gaming, it isn’t a surprise that most people don’t really catch when new PS5 games get cloud gaming support. But a few have! And they are big titles!
