Capcom surprised fans at Summer Game Fest with the announcement of Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline entry in the long-running survival horror series. Despite hints that no reveal would come during the show, the trailer closed out the event with a first look at the new protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, and a February 27, 2026 release date.
The trailer teased a mix of psychological horror and action, all set in a ruined Raccoon City. Built in RE ENGINE and developed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Resident Evil Requiem promises to push visuals further than ever before with detailed character models, expressive facial animation, and sweat-level realism.
A New Face, Familiar Setting, and Classic Resident Evil Horror Action
The trailer introduces Grace Ashcroft, an FBI agent sent to investigate a case linked to her past. She’s assigned to a murder investigation that brings her to the hotel where her mother was killed, setting the stage for a personal and terrifying journey. Monsters, corruption, and a creeping unease begin to surface as Grace digs deeper.
The game returns to Raccoon City, the site of the original outbreak. While the city has been sterilized, what remains is a haunting backdrop filled with danger. The footage shows ruined streets, decaying structures, and mutated creatures that look pulled straight from your worst nightmare.
There’s also speculation about Grace’s connection to Alyssa Ashcroft, a character from Resident Evil Outbreak. While Capcom hasn’t confirmed any ties yet, longtime fans may recognize the surname.
Capcom calls this a new era for the series. The tone leans into psychological horror while keeping the fast-paced action that’s been part of recent entries. Grace’s role as a technical analyst also hints at investigative elements layered into the story.
RE ENGINE, New Technology, and a New Era of Survival Horror
Capcom is using its RE ENGINE once again for Resident Evil Requiem, but this time it’s going even further with the power of modern hardware. The reveal trailer showed off highly detailed environments, expressive faces, and effects down to individual sweat droplets.
Resident Evil Requiem is being developed exclusively for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. According to Capcom, this entry is built to be the most realistic and immersive in the series so far. The game marks the start of a new era for Resident Evil. It brings the series back to its roots in Raccoon City while introducing new characters, modern visuals, and a mix of psychological horror and action.
More details will be shared throughout the year, including a playable demo planned for Gamescom 2025. Resident Evil Requiem launches February 27, 2026.
