ROG Xbox Ally Handhelds Launch October 16

Two handheld gaming consoles labeled ROG XBOX ALLY and ALLY X, marking the ROG Xbox Ally launch, with a release date of October 16.

The wait is almost over. Today, at Gamescom, Xbox and ASUS have confirmed that the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X will launch worldwide on October 16. These handhelds mark Xbox’s biggest step yet in handheld gaming, blending Windows flexibility with Xbox’s ecosystem and cloud support.

For cloud gamers, the Xbox Ally family is really about convenience. With Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta), Remote Play, and Game Pass built in. Since it also supports Battle.net and other PC storefronts, you’re not limited to one ecosystem. Instead, it feels like a device that gives you plenty of choices.

At Cloud Dosage, we’ve long believed gaming should be portable and untethered from a single device. The ROG Xbox Ally reflects that vision.

Built to Play Anywhere

When the ROG Xbox Ally handhelds launch on October 16, Xbox and ASUS are bringing more than just new hardware. Xbox also announced the Handheld Compatibility Program, a system designed to make gaming on portable devices more seamless.

With this program, games in your library will now carry clear compatibility labels. Titles marked “Handheld Optimized” are ready to go right away, with controller inputs, text input, resolution, and iconography already tuned for handheld use. Others may carry a “Mostly Compatible” tag, meaning you can still play, but may need a quick settings tweak.

Alongside these labels, a Windows Performance Fit badge will show whether a game “should play great” or “should play well” on your Ally device. Together, these indicators cut down on the trial-and-error often tied to PC handhelds, making it easier to just start playing.

Xbox also noted that this is just the start. More developers will be submitting games for testing, so the pool of handheld-ready titles will continue to expand long after launch.

AI Features Powering the Ally X

The Xbox Ally X isn’t just about better specs. It’s also the first handheld built to take advantage of AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. With its integrated neural processing unit (NPU), Xbox confirmed that a set of AI-driven features will begin rolling out early next year.

The most notable is Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR), which uses the NPU to upscale games running at lower resolutions. This delivers sharper visuals and smoother framerates across a wide range of titles, with no extra effort required from developers. Another feature, AI highlight reels, automatically captures key gameplay moments such as big boss fights or last-second wins and generates short clips to share with friends or online. More AI tools are planned in future updates as Xbox and developers continue to experiment with the hardware.

Alongside these features, the Ally X is also built with upgraded specs to handle today’s demanding games. It comes with 1TB of storage, 24GB of high-speed RAM, an 80Wh battery for longer play sessions, and impulse triggers designed to add more tactile feedback. Together, these upgrades position the Ally X as the higher-end option in the lineup. Combining upgraded hardware with features designed to grow over time.

ROG Xbox Ally Accessories and What’s Coming Next

Xbox made it clear that the ROG Xbox Ally launch is just the start. New features will continue rolling out, giving the handhelds more flexibility over time. One example is advanced shader delivery, a system that preloads shaders during downloads. This allows certain games to launch up to ten times faster, while also reducing battery strain on first play.

Xbox is also working on docking improvements. These improvements will make it easier to connect an Ally to a big screen setup. Future updates will improve display output and make controller pairing simpler. Auto SR will also be available when docked, helping the handhelds work better on the big screen.

Alongside these updates, ASUS announced the ROG Raikiri II Xbox Wireless Controller, built through the Designed for Xbox program. It features a 1000Hz polling rate in PC mode, anti-drift TMR joysticks, and dual-mode triggers. The controller is expected to ship worldwide this holiday.

Alongside the hardware, Xbox is rolling out the new Handheld Compatibility Program. This will give gamers clear indicators for which titles are handheld-ready, and how they’re expected to perform. The more powerful Xbox Ally X goes a step further. It has upgraded specs: 1TB storage, 24GB RAM, 80Wh battery, and impulse triggers, while unlocking AI-powered features like Automatic Super Resolution and AI highlight reels starting next year.

Future updates will continue to shape the experience.
