If you’re wondering how the editions differ or what to expect from the red Switch 2 game card, here’s everything you need to know.
Enhanced for Nintendo Switch 2
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma includes several enhancements that take advantage of the new hardware. These upgrades include:
- Sharper visuals thanks to higher resolution rendering
- Smoother gameplay with faster frame rates
- Support for Joy-Con 2 mouse input, offering more precise control during village-building segments
These features come built-in with the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. However, Nintendo Switch owners can also access them through a separate upgrade.
How the Upgrade Pack Works
If you already pre-ordered or plan to purchase the Nintendo Switch version, you’ll still be able to play the game on Switch 2. But to unlock system-specific upgrades like higher resolution and new input support, you’ll need the Upgrade Pack.
The Upgrade Pack:
- Costs €10 / £10 / A$15 (with region-specific pricing in the eShop)
- Launches the same day as the game (June 5, 2025)
- Enables full save data transfer between versions
- Is included on the physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition card
- Can be bought separately via the eShop if you own the Switch version
Physical Editions and Compatibility
The red Nintendo Switch 2 Edition cartridge is fully compatible with both systems, but delivers different features depending on which console it’s used with. Insert the card into either console and the correct version launches automatically—no full-game download required.
The physical Limited Edition is only available for Nintendo Switch. However, it’s fully compatible with Switch 2 and all included DLC will work after purchasing the Upgrade Pack. Unfortunately, due to production and safety timelines, there won’t be a Limited Edition for Switch 2 at launch.
In Europe, Limited Edition extras (like collectible items) won’t be sold separately. These will only be available bundled with the game from select retailers, due to country-specific packaging and safety rules.
Seamless Path Forward
Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma looks to make a strong debut on Nintendo Switch 2 with meaningful visual and performance improvements, while still supporting legacy hardware. Whether you’re jumping in for the first time or upgrading from the Switch version, there’s a clear path to enjoy the enhanced experience.
