Splitgate 2 Returns to Beta for Major Overhaul

1047 Games has announced that Splitgate 2 is heading back into beta, as the studio re-evaluates and rebuilds core systems of the game following community feedback. The team acknowledged launching too early and is now committed to reshaping the experience to better align with what made the original Splitgate resonate with players.

In a statement, the developers reflected on nearly a decade of work, admitting that in their eagerness to share Splitgate 2, they made “boneheaded mistakes”, rushed features, and lost sight of the polished, portal-driven gameplay that fans came to expect.

The beta phase is expected to last until early next year. During this time, 1047 Games will be:

  • Reworking progression from the ground up
  • Increasing the presence of portals across maps
  • Simplifying the monetization model
  • Refocusing on classic game modes
  • Conducting regular playtests and surveys

Splitgate 2 Studio Faces Layoffs as Original Servers Shut Down

The studio is also undergoing internal restructuring to prioritize development. Sadly, this includes the reduction of some roles, with laid-off team members receiving severance and job placement support. The studio hopes to rehire affected staff in the future.

As part of the restructuring, the original Splitgate servers will shut down in a month. The decision comes after significant operational costs and a desire to keep as many team members as possible during the rework. Offline or peer-to-peer functionality for the original game is being explored, and 1047 Games aims to bring its core elements into Splitgate 2 in the future.

Despite the transition, Splitgate 2 will remain online, with Chapter 3 and key updates still in the pipeline. The studio has emphasized its renewed focus on community feedback and promised more transparent development going forward.

1047 Games closed the announcement with a commitment to the project and its players: “We love this game, and we love this community too much to ever quit. So we won’t.” Will the team be able to Make Splitgate 2 Great Again? Only time will tell.
