Spyro Reignited Trilogy brings back everyone’s favorite purple dragon in a remaster that combines nostalgia with modern improvements. Originally developed by Insomniac Games in the late ‘90s, Spyro’s original adventures—Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon—have been fully reimagined by Toys for Bob, giving the trilogy a fresh look that honours its roots.

In this remastered trilogy, you’ll guide Spyro across worlds filled with quirky characters, platforming challenges, and hidden collectibles. Each level brings back the excitement of the originals. The gameplay stays true to its roots, letting you explore, solve puzzles, and face off against enemies. Updated mechanics and quality-of-life improvements make everything smoother and more accessible. Despite the changes, the trilogy keeps the original charm that defined it.

In this Spyro Reignited Trilogy review, we’ll look at how Toys for Bob transformed the series. With graphical upgrades and modernized mechanics, this journey offers both longtime fans and newcomers a familiar yet refreshed experience.

Spyro’s Journey Across Magical Worlds

Spyro Reignited Trilogy takes you through colorful worlds filled with memorable characters and exciting quests. Starting with Spyro the Dragon, you’ll guide Spyro through the Dragon Realms. Your mission is to free your friends from a curse set by Gnasty Gnorc. The first game introduces you to colorful landscapes, unique levels, and a straightforward mission: rescue your friends and defeat Gnasty.

In Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, Spyro is transported to the world of Avalar. There, he faces new challenges and meets characters like Hunter the cheetah and Elora the faun. In this game, Spyro faces a new threat as Ripto takes control of Avalar. With added abilities and new friends, you’ll join Spyro on a mission to bring peace back to this world.

The last game, Spyro: Year of the Dragon, you’ll rescue dragon eggs stolen by a sorceress with dark plans for the Dragon Realms. Year of the Dragon introduces additional playable characters, each with unique abilities, adding variety to Spyro’s quest. The story takes you through a variety of lands, from icy caverns to mystical deserts, with surprises at every turn.

While each game offers its own charm, the first game is still my favourite. There’s something timeless about helping Spyro rescue his friends and explore these worlds for the first time—it’s a journey that, even now, feels just as fun and memorable.

A Classic Mix of Adventure and Action

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy stays true to its platforming roots. It blends exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving in a way that feels both familiar and enjoyable. Each game balances platforming and action, whether it’s collecting gems, rescuing dragons, or taking down enemies with Spyro’s flame breath and charging attacks. The remastered controls feel smooth, making gliding across cliffs or charging through obstacles natural.

Quality-of-life improvements keep the experience fresh while holding onto its classic charm. Enhanced camera controls, for example, allow smoother navigation as you explore Spyro’s worlds. And while each game introduces new abilities for Spyro, the basics remain consistent, letting you jump right in.

One moment that stands out for me was revisiting the glide mechanics in Spyro the Dragon. Timing each jump and glide perfectly over tricky gaps brought back memories of the original game’s challenges. Despite the updated controls, I felt the same thrill (and a bit of relief) when I finally landed on that last tricky platform.

The trilogy also offers plenty of collectibles and hidden areas, rewarding you for taking the time to explore each world. With varied enemies and platforming obstacles, Spyro Reignited Trilogy keeps the classic adventure alive while adding just the right polish.

Classic Charm with a Modern Shine

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy brings Spyro’s world to life with an art style that’s true to the originals. Remastered visuals capture the colour of Spyro’s world, making each realm feel brighter and more detailed. Detailed landscapes, flowing water, and dynamic lighting give the game a refreshed look, while preserving the cartoonish charm you remember.

Each character, from Spyro to his friends and enemies, has been redesigned with extra detail. Spyro’s animations—whether gliding, charging, or breathing fire—feel smooth, bringing personality to every movement. The updates extend to enemies, with each looking distinct, from lumbering gnorcs to thieves sprinting with dragon eggs.

The environments look impressive, particularly in levels with detailed layouts. From the grassy plains of the Dragon Realms to the mystical towers of Avalar, each world shows more depth. These visual changes make exploration enjoyable, as there’s always something new to appreciate.

Despite the enhancements, the remaster preserves the original’s charm, keeping what made Spyro’s world special. The updated visuals respect the classic style while adding polish, making the trilogy enjoyable for fans and newcomers alike.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a Nostalgic Return to Platforming Magic

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a nostalgic journey that captures the essence of the original games while adding modern enhancements. Each game brings its own unique charm. And, the remaster’s attention to detail is evident through its updated visuals, smoother controls, and carefully redesigned environments. Spyro’s classic platforming, exploration, and lighthearted storylines remain true to the originals. They offer both long-time fans and newcomers a memorable experience.

With gameplay that’s simple but satisfying, the trilogy strikes a balance between nostalgia and accessibility. The updates make Spyro’s world more approachable, without altering the core elements that made the series a classic. While the straightforward gameplay may feel repetitive at times, the colourful worlds and diverse challenges keep the adventure rewarding.

Whether you’re revisiting these classics or exploring them for the first time, Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a tribute to a platforming icon. It’s a chance to relive—or experience for the first time—Spyro’s timeless quest to save his world.
