Super Meat Boy Forever – Game Review

Super Meat Boy Forever

Super Meat Boy Forever is the sequel to the beloved indie platformer, Super Meat Boy. Released a decade after the original, this game brings back the iconic characters you know and love. In this new adventure, Meat Boy and Bandage Girl must rescue their child, Nugget, from the villainous Dr. Fetus. The game introduces a bold shift in gameplay, transforming the classic platforming experience into an auto-running format.

While the original was celebrated for its precise controls and challenging levels, Forever opts for a different approach. As a result, the changes in gameplay mechanics may leave you wondering how it compares to the original. Get ready to jump, dash, and punch your way through a wild ride filled with obstacles and surprises as we take a look at Super Meat Boy Forever!

A quirky, yet charming tale of parenthood full of humour

Super Meat Boy Forever features the same blend of dark comedy, playful character interactions and silliness that made the first game a cult classic. Forever picks up the story where the original left off. Meat Boy and Bandage Girl are now parents to their child, Nugget. Unfortunately, their peaceful life is disrupted when the villainous Dr. Fetus kidnaps Nugget.

The game features a surprisingly rich storyline, complemented with well-animated cutscenes. These cutscenes add depth to the characters, making them more relatable. You’ll encounter various side characters during boss battles, each contributing to the story’s progression. Unfortunately, as with the first game, the story is not the main focus of the game.

While Super Meat Boy Forever’s story is entertaining and there is an obvious effort to provide a more detailed storyline, it feels like it’s more of an afterthought. The core experience revolves around navigating procedurally generated levels, which in my opinion detracts from the story’s impact.

Overall, Super Meat Boy Forever falls in line with the series’ unique style, but it doesn’t really reach its full potential. The blend of humour and action keeps things lively, but the gameplay mechanics overshadow the narrative. Still, the quirky charm and humour put a smile on my face more than I can count on two hands.

A significant shift in gameplay mechanics

Super Meat Boy Forever’s gameplay is significantly different compared to its predecessor. Instead of traditional platforming controls, Forever adopts an auto-runner style. This means you no longer control Meat Boy’s movement; he runs automatically.

As a fan of the original Super Meat Boy, I felt somewhat let down in these gameplay changes. The switch to an auto-runner format is a huge change from the precise control that we had in Super Meat Boy. In the first game, you could navigate each level, perfecting your moves and improving your times with each run. That feeling of achievement is mostly gone now. Your focus is now on timing your jumps, punches, and slides to navigate through levels.

Although the new mechanics, like simpler controls and procedurally generated levels, have their merits, they come with drawbacks. First, the auto-running style feels awkward. Second, not being able to control Meat Boy directly totally took away from my fun. Finally, I really missed the skill and excitement of mastering each level and finding secrets and collectibles at my own pace. With the auto-runner format, I often felt rushed.

The changes are all bad though. I do like the fact that the procedurally generated levels add the potential for thousands of different combinations, making each playthrough feel fresh and unpredictable. And, the game still maintains the series trademark difficulty.

A significant visual upgrade

Super Meat Boy Forever’s visuals are a significant upgrade from the original game. The art style is cleaner and more refined, bringing the chaotic world of Meat Boy to life in a whole new way. Each level is filled with colourful backgrounds and detailed animations. The character designs remain true to the series, maintaining the quirky charm that fans love.

While Forever’s soundtrack may not be as good as the original, it still offers catchy tunes that keep you engaged. It has an energetic vibe about it that goes along with the fast-paced action on the screen. Voice acting is minimal, but it fits the game’s tone. The cutscenes feature animated sequences that add personality, humour and tells the story of Meat Boy, Bandage Girl, and their baby, Nugget.

Overall, Super Meat Boy Forever successfully modernizes the game’s presentation. While it may not capture the same raw charm as the original, it offers a combination of improved graphics and a lively soundtrack.

Super Meat Boy Forever

Super Meat Boy Forever is a bold yet divisive sequel

Super Meat Boy Forever brings a fresh take on the beloved franchise, but it also strays significantly from what made the original game a classic. On the positive side, the game features a vibrant art style and improved visuals that enhance the chaotic world of Meat Boy. The lively soundtrack, while not as iconic as the original, still adds an energetic vibe that complements the fast-paced action. The introduction of a storyline with cutscenes adds depth, making the experience feel more engaging.

However, the shift to an auto-running mechanic is a mixed bag of results. While it offers a new challenge, fans of the original may find it frustrating. The precise control that defined the first game has been replaced with a more limited set of abilities, which can make navigating the levels feel cumbersome. The procedural generation of levels offers a fresh and new experience every time. However, I often missed and wished for the carefully crafted design from the first game in Super Meat Boy Forever.

Ultimately, Super Meat Boy Forever is a game that has its moments and can be enjoyable, especially for newcomers to the series. However, if you were hoping for a direct continuation of the original’s pixel-perfect platforming, you might disappointed. The game successfully modernizes the franchise but at the cost of some of its core elements, leaving you with a mixed experience that balances innovation with nostalgia.
