Epic Games has officially announced that Fortnite: Save the World will transition to a free-to-play model on April 16. Long surpassed by its Battle Royale counterpart, the co-op PvE experience is finally opening its doors to the entire community. Accompanied by a massive pre-registration campaign featuring tiered rewards and significant updates for cloud gaming platforms.
For cloud gaming users, the news is particularly important. Epic confirmed that the free-to-play version of Save the World will be fully supported on Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna. However, there is a notable warning for mobile players: the mode will remain unavailable on smartphones and tablets, even when accessed through cloud services. Interestingly, the announcement explicitly lists the Nintendo Switch 2 as a supported platform. All while confirming the original Nintendo Switch will not receive the update.
Community Milestones and Rewards
To celebrate the launch, Epic has initiated a “Community Goal” registration phase. Players who sign up before the April 16 deadline contribute to three major milestones. Each unlocking exclusive in-game content for all participants:
- Milestone #1 (300,000 Players): Save The World Jess Banner
- Milestone #2 (700,000 Players): Kyle’s Construction Spray
- Milestone #3 (1,000,000 Players): Snowstrike Hero (Save the World specific)
While the first two rewards are granted upon reaching the milestones, the Snowstrike Hero will be distributed when the game mode goes free-to-play. New players will need to complete the in-game tutorial to claim their rewards. While existing founders and current players will receive them automatically if the goals are met.
A New Chapter for Co-op Play
Save the World offers a deeper, more structural experience than the Battle Royale mode, focusing on harvesting resources, building forts, and defending objectives. With the move to free-to-play, Epic is clearly aiming to revitalize the game’s population and use the hardware capabilities of newer generations of consoles and cloud services.
