SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have unveiled more details about Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, the upcoming spin-off of the beloved Like a Dragon series. During a dedicated Like a Dragon Direct presentation, we got an extended look at the game’s exciting blend of land and sea action, innovative gameplay mechanics, and customization options.

Launching February 21, the game promises to take the franchise in a bold new direction, starring fan-favourite Goro Majima as he reinvents himself as a modern-day pirate.

Exciting New Gameplay Mechanics Revealed

During the recent Like a Dragon Direct, SEGA showcased the unique gameplay mechanics in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Goro Majima’s combat styles—Mad Dog and Sea Dog—were highlighted, each offering distinct approaches to battle. Mad Dog emphasizes fast, melee-focused combat, while Sea Dog introduces cutlasses, pistols, and powerful Dark Instrument summons.

Naval combat took centre stage, with details about ship customization and crew management. You can recruit over 100 crew members, improve your stats through bonding, and equip weapons like lasers or flamethrowers. You can also battle massive sea monsters, adding a thrilling layer to the ocean gameplay.

The presentation also teased the Pirate Coliseum’s four battle types and mini-games scattered across the map, ensuring plenty of activities outside the main quest.

Under a blue sky, the captain of the pirate ship steers with fierce determination, evoking a mystique reminiscent of "Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii." Multiple ships trail closely behind, adding to the thrilling high-seas adventure.

A Swashbuckling Tale Unfolds

The Like a Dragon Direct offered a closer look at Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii’s intriguing story. Goro Majima wakes up on Rich Island with amnesia, setting the stage for a modern-day pirate adventure. As he pieces together his lost memories, Majima becomes a pirate captain, leading his crew on a quest for treasure and truth.

The game’s Hawaiian-inspired setting combines tropical landscapes with bustling city areas. From sandy beaches to mysterious islands, the world offers a mix of exploration and combat. The story is designed as a standalone experience, but longtime fans will appreciate its connections to the broader Like a Dragon series.

Post-Launch Plans and New Game Plus

One of the biggest announcements during the Like a Dragon Direct was the confirmation of a free New Game Plus mode. Unlike Infinite Wealth, where this feature was locked behind paid DLC, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will include it as a post-launch update. While the exact release date remains unknown, SEGA has confirmed that it’s in the works.

The Direct also revealed exclusive bonuses for signing up for the Like a Dragon newsletter. Subscribers can unlock Goro Majima’s outfit inspired by Kiryu, adding a fun nod to series history.

These updates highlight RGG Studio’s commitment to fan feedback, addressing criticisms from previous titles while enhancing the overall experience
