File this one in the rumor/speculation category. Good friend of the site, Jon Scarr, recently reported that Fortnite could be on its way to Amazon Luna! This appears to have been first discovered in the following tweet:
The evidence hinges on Fortnite client code that was found to include a reference to “Luna”:
Luna hasn’t been having the easiest time keeping games in its catalog, but picking up what is arguably the world’s most popular game, could help change it fortunes! Fortnite has a massive following and is primed for Cloud Gaming after it was removed from both the iOS App Store and the Google Play store during a legal dispute between Epic Games and Apple/Google.
Fortnite, a free to play title, is already available on a number of cloud gaming services including GeForce Now, Boosteroid and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Anyone can play it for free on GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming – no subscription required.
On Xbox Cloud Gaming, in particular, you can play Fortnite for free (no Game Pass subscription required) and you aren’t likely to even hit any queues when getting started. You’ll also be able to pick up your progress on a console and earn coveted Xbox achievements.
Luna, though, could be another good option for playing Fortnite on the go – especially as it typically shines fidelity wise. If a Luna version were to also incorporates Epic’s platform social features and achievements (similar to how the Ubisoft+ channel works) it could mitigate some of the pain points we find with using the service in general.
Were this rumor to be true, we suspect that Fortnite would either be free to play for anyone with an Amazon Prime account or would be included in the Luna+ tier. It’s certainly possible it could go free to play for anyone and everyone, but it is hard to see how Amazon would recover its server costs in that model – other than perhaps using the game as a loss-leader.
Time will tell if this rumor comes to fruition, but let us know if this is something you’d like to see!
