Square Enix has officially announced the release date for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. The game will launch on October 30, 2025, and brings the first two entries in the Dragon Quest series together in one package. It will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Windows Store.

This remake continues the HD-2D style seen in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, blending pixel art with modern 3D visuals. The two games are connected as part of what’s known as the Erdrick Trilogy, which tells the story of a legendary hero and their descendants across three linked adventures. With this new collection, fans can now complete the trilogy on modern platforms.

Here’s a closer look at the story, features, and what to expect when the remake arrives.

Two Adventures, One Legendary Bloodline

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake continues the Erdrick legacy with two connected stories that follow the descendants of a legendary hero. Both games take place after the events of Dragon Quest III, offering a look at what happened after peace returned to the land of Alefgard.

In Dragon Quest I, you take on the role of Erdrick’s descendant. After the defeat of the Lord of the Underworld, peace was restored. But that peace doesn’t last. The Dragonlord rises, spreading monsters across the land once again. It’s up to you to stop him and save Alefgard from destruction.

Dragon Quest II picks up many years later. The hero from the first game becomes a legend, and his descendants rule three kingdoms. When monsters return, a group of young royals sets out to stop the growing threat. The story follows their journey as they fight to protect their world and honor their ancestor’s legacy.

These stories wrap up the Erdrick Trilogy and follow directly after the events of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.

Classic Gameplay with Modern Touches

Both games in Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake have been updated with new features while keeping their original structure intact. The remake brings HD-2D visuals to both adventures, combining pixel-style characters with 3D environments and lighting effects. This graphical style was developed by Team Asano and gives the world a clean, modern look without losing its retro feel.

In Dragon Quest I, combat has been expanded. The original game featured one-on-one battles, but the remake now includes encounters with multiple enemies. This makes it feel closer to later entries in the series and adds more variety to combat.

Dragon Quest II keeps its party-based system and expands the world with new areas to explore. Both games feature additional story content not found in the original versions. Along with visual upgrades, there are also other updates and improvements across both titles. These changes aim to modernize the experience while staying true to the original adventures.
