Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced the appointment of Hideaki Nishino as President and CEO, effective April 1, 2025. This marks an important leadership evolution within Sony, which was first announced in May 2024.
Nishino, who has served as CEO of the Platform Business Group, will now oversee all operations of SIE. Hermen Hulst will remain CEO of the Studio Business Group and will report directly to Nishino. With these changes at the helm of SIE and Sony Group Corporation, the company is positioning itself for a new era of leadership across both gaming and corporate sectors.
Sony’s New Leadership Structure
Sony’s restructuring also involves a change at the top of the parent company. Hiroki Totoki, the current President, COO, and CFO of Sony Group Corporation, will step down from his role as SIE Chairman. He will become the President and CEO of Sony Group Corporation, effective April 1, 2025. Lin Tao, SIE’s current Senior Vice President, will transition from her role at SIE to become the new CFO of Sony Group Corporation.
Totoki expressed confidence in the future of SIE under Nishino’s leadership. “It has been a pleasure working closely with Nishino and Hermen,” he said. “SIE is entering an exciting new chapter, and I am confident in its future.”
Nishino’s Vision for Sony Interactive Entertainment
Nishino has been with Sony since 2000 and has played a key role in developing PlayStation’s platform experience. As CEO of SIE’s Platform Business Group, he oversaw technology, product services, and third-party developer relations. In his new role, Nishino will expand his responsibilities across all of SIE. His focus will be on driving innovation in gaming, expanding the PlayStation community, and enhancing cross-platform experiences.
“I am honored to take the helm at Sony Interactive Entertainment,” Nishino said. “We will continue to develop entertainment experiences for everyone, pushing the boundaries of innovation while growing the PlayStation community in exciting new ways. I look forward to working closely with Hermen and the entire team.”
Acknowledging the Contributions of Outgoing Leaders
As Nishino steps into his new role with a focus on PlayStation’s future, it’s crucial to acknowledge the leadership that laid the groundwork for these opportunities. These leadership changes also mark the end of Kenichiro Yoshida’s tenure as CEO of Sony Group Corporation. Yoshida has been instrumental in shaping the company’s strategic direction, strengthening Sony’s focus on creativity and entertainment.
Under his leadership, Sony significantly increased investments in content, including the acquisition of EMI and expansion into gaming and film. “I’m grateful for the support I’ve received over the years and am confident that these changes will position Sony for future growth,” Yoshida said in his remarks.
Changes in Sony Group Corporation’s Leadership
Hiroki Totoki’s elevation to CEO of Sony Group Corporation follows his contributions to Sony’s growth strategy. He has been integral in expanding Sony’s content IP and semiconductor investments. “I will build on the foundation laid by my predecessors,” Totoki said. “We will continue to innovate and connect diverse ideas to create new value.”
The leadership shakeup also includes Lin Tao becoming the first female CFO in Sony’s history. Tao has played a critical role in SIE’s finance, corporate strategy, and development teams, and her leadership will be instrumental in Sony’s future growth.
The Next Chapter for Sony Interactive Entertainment
With these leadership changes, Sony is well-positioned to continue driving innovation in the gaming and entertainment sectors. Under Nishino’s leadership, SIE will focus on enhancing the PlayStation community, expanding the brand’s IP, and bringing games to new media, such as TV and film through PlayStation Productions.
This shift could strengthen Sony’s competitive edge in the evolving gaming landscape. Especially with the focus on cloud gaming, cross-platform play, and upcoming projects like the Uncharted movie and The Last of Us series.
Nishino and Totoki bring decades of experience to their new roles, and Sony is poised for an exciting future. As one of the leading companies in gaming and entertainment, Sony’s strategic direction will be closely watched as it shapes the future of gaming.
