Xbox just recently announced an official Xbox Cloud Gaming application is coming to Amazon Fire TV sticks. But what about Google TV and Android TV devices? The latest Chromecast devices, NVIDIA’s Shield TV and Walmart’s Onn TV devices are major TV streamers that millions of people of use.
Whilst there are over 20 million players using the Xbox cloud gaming service (according to Microsoft), there is still no official app for Google TV (or Android TV, upon which Google TV is built). But, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible to enjoy Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on your big screen, though. You can get started by following these simple steps!
While the steps to follow may be simple, there are a few of them. The good news is that once you have done it, it’s done. It isn’t something you need to do every time you want to play.
Install the Downloader and Launcher App
The very first thing that you will need to do is download two from the Play Store onto your TV: Downloader, by the folks at AFTVnews.com and Sideload Launcher. As Xbox Game Pass Ultimate isn’t available from the Google Play Store, Downloader will help you to download the app from another source.
All you need to do is search for Downloader and Sideload Launcher in the Google Play Store on your Google TV or Android TV. Or, if you follow the links above on a computer where you are signed in with the same Google account as your TV, you may also be able to install the apps to your Android TV right from your browser.
You have now done all the groundwork. You are ready to download and install Xbox Game Pass.
Download and Install the Xbox Game Pass App
Important note: You want to download the Xbox Game Pass app – NOT the main Xbox app.
Open the Downloader app and simply enter ‘Xbox Game Pass APK’ in the main search field.
This will return Google search results of different sites to download from. We recommend using APK Mirror (the third non-sponsored search result for us), but there are plenty of trustworthy options out there.
There are a few clicks involved to reach the actually apk (install file) download. You can follow the gallery below for the various pages. In general, download the latest version of the app and choose the “armabi-v7a” version.
The download should begin. When it is finished the app should automatically begin to install. You’ll be asked if you really want to install an app from “Unkown Sources.” You’ll need to agree and give Downloader the permissions to install apps.
The app should now be installed! To find it, open the Sideload Launcher app you installed earlier on your home screen.
You should now be good to go. Now you just need to sign in to your Xbox account and enjoy some cloud gaming
When the app launches, it should look just like the Game Pass app on an Android tablet. It allows you to play games from the cloud right on your Google TV or Android TV device. No console required!
Conclusion and Caveats
As we noted above, this application is not developed with the TV in mind and not specifically optimized for TV hardware. So, you might run into issues or reduced performance from what you’d see in an official app when it comes. But, it does work, and it does let you play Xbox Cloud games on a Chromecast with Google TV, NVIDIA Shield or other Google TV and Android TV device. We’ve generally had pretty good experiences with it ourselves.
