Netflix Games recently reported hitting over one hundred games in its growing game catalog along with the successful launches of Netflix-developed games Netflix Stories: Virgin River, Netflix Stories: Perfect Match, and Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit. However, there is an issue: all the attention seems to be on Netflix’s mobile games, leaving Netflix Cloud Gaming with few news updates. In this editorial, I will discuss why Netflix needs to release games across its two platforms at the same time on the same day.
Cloud Gaming Continues To Grow:
Let’s start with a point which is relevant to the very existence of the site you are reading this on. The popularity of cloud gaming has continued to grow over the last few years, with companies like Xbox rolling out new features as well as supporting cloud services including Nvidia GeForce Now and Boosteroid. Additionally, Amazon Luna has signed agreements with PC gaming platform GOG and has launched its platform in Austria, the Netherlands, and Poland. Netflix, for the most part, hasn’t sat idly by; they launched their cloud gaming offering in five new territories this year, including Mexico, Spain, France, Germany, and Italy, as well as releasing a handful of new games including Infernax and Underwatermelon Fruit Merge. With the popularity of cloud gaming still growing and expected to continue to grow, it makes sense for Netflix to expand its cloud gaming library.
The Games Need To Keep Flowing
Despite the continued growth of cloud gaming and Netflix expanding its cloud gaming offering into five new markets, Netflix hasn’t released many notable titles on Netflix Cloud Gaming, with the biggest internal release this year being the game Underwatermelon Fruit Merge. Despite this, Netflix has released games based on many of their popular TV shows this year, including games based on Virgin River, Money Heist, and Perfect Match. However, the big game they missed the opportunity to grow its internal offerings on its cloud gaming was Cozy Grove Camp Spirit.
As of right now, the biggest game franchises owned by Netflix that are on Netflix Games are Oxenfree and Cozy Grove. However, the first Oxenfree game is available on both Netflix Cloud Gaming and its mobile gaming platform. Cozy Grove Camp Spirit is only available on Netflix’s mobile gaming. Cozy Grove Camp Spirit is a cozy game which has a huge market, so by not adding this game to its cloud gaming offering, it feels like Netflix Games is missing an opportunity.
The Future
If Netflix wants to become a leader in the cloud gaming market, it needs to consistently add new games to its platform, both internal games and external games. However, if Netflix doesn’t want to release more of its own games to its cloud gaming platform, it is likely that many other publishers will overlook such a platform. Now, Netflix Cloud Gaming is still in beta; however, I feel that Netflix needs to add more of its own games to its platform, like Stranger Things 1984, Money Heist Ultimate Choice, Afterparty, and Cozy Grove Camp Spirit. If Netflix wants to attract longtime gamers to its gaming platform, then they need to make sure they continue to release great games on a great cloud gaming platform.
