Why Netflix Focusing On Video Games Over Interactive Movies Is A Good Thing

Per recent reports, Netflix seems to be moving away from making interactive films and television series as they shift strategy to focus on video games. So, let’s discuss why this is a good thing for Netflix subscribers.

Video Games Are Designed To Be More Interactive Than Movies

We’re not building those specific experiences anymore. The technology was very limiting, and the potential for what we could do in that area was somewhat capped. But we learned a great deal from it.

Seeing the technology (interactive video) being described as “limiting” shouldn’t be surprising, as there is a lot more you can do with a full-fledged video game than what can be achieved with an interactive film or television episode. Netflix has invested heavily in video games and also already has one hundred titles across mobile and cloud. This already dwarfs the number of interactive movies Netflix ever made.

Now, Netflix Games have another big advantage over interactive specials, and that’s the fact Netflix already has around a dozen games based on their own IP. These include games based on IP like Too Hot To Handle, Stranger Things, Love Is Blind, Money Heist and Nailed It to name just a handful. Netflix has also already spoken about developing games based on Squid Game, Rebel Moon, Extraction, and Black Mirror. For comparison, the most popular interactive movie was Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. However it clearly wasn’t successful enough for Netflix to continue to invest in that type of content.

Final Thoughts

Netflix Games has a huge amount of potential to grow and become one of the biggest gaming platforms in the world. Netflix’s shift in strategy from producing interactive specials to producing full fledged video games is something gamers should be celebrating. Netflix has assembled a talented team of developers, and we will hopefully see more big name games make the jump to Netflix soon.
