Netflix Games and Amazon Luna are two popular gaming platforms with over 100 games and different business models and subscriptions. In this article, we are going to go over the differences between the two services and whether or not you should use both.
Netflix Games and Amazon Luna – Two Subscriptions of a Kind?
Okay let’s start by looking at how you can access both Amazon Luna and Netflix Games. You’ll understand why this comparison makes sense in a minute. With Netflix Games, the access is pretty universal; you subscribe to Netflix on any plan, and you get access to their games ad-free. Amazon Luna is a little different, as you can subscribe to Amazon Luna on its own. Or, you can subscribe to a basic offering through Amazon Prime, which also includes Amazon’s Netflix competitor, Prime Video.
So, both Netflix games an the Luna Prime channel are included with a video-on-demand subscription service. However, I think the fact that Amazon Luna is a service which you can subscribe to standalone makes it a bit more usable than Netflix Games. This is a huge difference, as Netflix Games is just another piece of Netflix’s platform, whilst Amazon Luna gives you different options on how to subscribe to their service.
Subscription Prices
Let’s next cover the prices of the subscriptions we are discussing. The good news is both platforms have a “somewhat free” offering with Netflix Games being bundled into every tier of Netflix and Amazon Luna have a channel included with free with Amazon Prime. As we mentioned above though, Amazon Luna is also available individually. Netflix subscriptions range from $6.99/£4.99 per month with ads up to the $22.99/£17.99 per month premium tier without ads. At this point, however, no ads are shown during Netflix Games regardless of the tier you are on.
Amazon Luna has a basic prime channel that is available through Amazon Prime which costs $14.99/£8.99 per month. This gives you access to about a dozen games. Or, you can subscribe to Amazon Luna Plus separately for $9.99/£8.99 a month which gives you access to about 100 games.
Different Game Catalogs
The next point is quite important for game platforms: the game catalogs. Netflix Games currently offers over one hundred games on its mobile app as well as ten games available on its cloud gaming platform.
Amazon Luna in comparison offers around one hundred games on its Luna+ cloud gaming collection, but also allows gamers to link their Luna accounts with GOG.com and Ubisoft+. This means your library on Luna could theoretically be endless depending on how many games on each storefront end up becoming verified to work on Luna. We also have to note here that Netflix Cloud Gaming is still in Beta and is slowly rolling out new games. But, for now Amazon Luna would win this comparison.
So, Which One Should You Use?
Comparing game platforms is always difficult; however, in this case, due to the widely different subscription models and game offerings, I wouldn’t recommend picking one over the other due to the strengths of both.
Amazon Luna has the advantage if you own a ton of games on GOG or subscribe to Ubisoft+ and just happen to be subscribed to Amazon Prime. Likewise, if you’re a Netflix user, you have access to over one hundred games on mobile and almost a dozen games in the cloud. Personally, I prefer Netflix Games to Amazon Luna, but that’s just my own preference. Yours may differ. There are dozens of cloud gaming services, with Amazon Luna and Netflix Games only being two of them. If you’re interested in cloud gaming, then I recommend trying both and then coming to your own conclusion.
