Seattle studio Spry Fox is going independent again. Stephen Totilo at GAME FILE reported that Netflix is selling the studio back to its founders, David Edery and Daniel Cook. Spry Fox originally joined Netflix in 2022, and the team has been building a large online project called Spirit Crossing for the service.
Spry Fox Splits From Netflix
The shift comes as part of Netflix’s evolving games strategy. Totilo notes that this is similar to what happened with Team Blue last year. That group had been working on a big multi-platform project before Netflix moved in a different direction. Team Blue closed. Spry Fox will stay open and continue working on its game.
The key difference here is that Spry Fox is not shutting down. It will return to its pre-acquisition status and keep full ownership. Spirit Crossing also stays in development. Netflix plans to publish it on mobile, and Spry Fox will have the freedom to look at other platforms for the game.
Edery shared a statement with GAME FILE about the move. He said the team is grateful for the time at Netflix and their continued partnership. He added that the goal for Spirit Crossing is to bring people together and inspire kindness. Being able to reach more gamers across different platforms aligns with that vision.
Netflix has not commented on the decision to part ways with the studio. Totilo reports that the company has reduced its internal games teams recently, but some recent announcements point to a shift in focus rather than a pullback.
