Shovel Knight Makes a Return in Yooka-Replaylee

The Year of the Lizard and the Bat is here! And, with it an exciting announcement to kick off Playtonic’s 10th anniversary celebrations! The studio has confirmed that Shovel Knight will be making his return in Yooka-Replaylee, joining the dynamic duo of Yooka and Laylee.

Yooka-Replaylee is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. In February, Playtonic will officially celebrate its 10th anniversary. And, Shovel Knight’s return is just the beginning of the exciting plans in store. There are more surprises planned to celebrate this milestone. And, fans can expect even more exciting announcements in the near future.

Shovel Knight’s Courageous Return

Shovel Knight, the iconic shovel-wielding hero, is returning in Yooka-Replaylee. He’s found himself in this new adventure after an unexpected detour. Thankfully, Yacht Club Games has given him the go-ahead to join the fun.

This time, Shovel Knight not only has a shiny new makeover. He also brings a brand-new quest for players to undertake, rewarding them with coveted Pagies.

In a surprising twist, the blue-armored knight with large horns makes a grand return in Yooka-Replaylee, holding his iconic shovel while standing on grass near an ancient stone wall.

What’s New in Yooka-Replaylee?

Alongside Shovel Knight’s cameo, Yooka-Replaylee introduces a host of new features and changes. In addition, Cornelius, the friendly piggy bank, has been transformed, with his platinum coins now taking the spotlight—stealing the golden hue once held by the Quills. This change introduces level-specific Quills, each tied to a specific level’s theme. These changes are part of a broader transformation that sees Trowzer’s role fundamentally altered. The crafty salesman now offers an entirely new set of wares, though details are being kept under wraps for now.

In another major update, players will now have access to the full arsenal of Yooka and Laylee’s moves from the start. This significantly changes the dynamics of the gameplay. Additionally, a new collectible, Pagie Pieces, will unlock bonus content as they are collected, adding more challenges for completionists.

One of the most exciting changes is that levels will now be available in their fully “expanded” state from the beginning, giving players an unrestricted exploration experience. As a result, no longer will you have to wait for levels to open up; everything is ready to explore from the start.
