Shuten Order is the latest major project from the minds at Tookyo Games, the collective led by Kazutaka Kodaka, best known as the creator and writer of the wildly successful Danganronpa series. Developed in collaboration with DMM Games and Neilo, and published by Spike Chunsoft, the game launched with significant anticipation from fans of high-stakes, twist-filled narratives. This ambitious visual novel and adventure game hybrid immediately signals its heritage: a commitment to surreal aesthetics, memorable characters, and dense, multi-layered conspiracy thrillers.

Kodaka’s Wild Ride Continues
The premise of Shuten Order is immediately intriguing: you awaken as Rei Shimobe, a temporary, amnesiac body with ties to the infamous Shuten Order. With only four days before your temporary body disintegrates, you must uncover the identity of your killer among the five Ministers of the Order. The setting, in a dystopian city under a countdown to the end of the world, establishes a tone of urgency and paranoia. The narrative is divided into five main routes. Each is centered on a suspect/Minister and designed with a distinct adventure subgenre (mystery, escape room, dating sim, etc.).
This branching structure is the heart of the experience, forcing the player to complete all of them to piece together the central mystery. The plot twists are constant and, as expected from a Kodaka game, the story is dense and full of memorable characters. However, at times, the information overload and the use of metaphors in dialogue (necessary to conceal the truth) can cause the pacing to drag in certain sections. Despite this, the sense of intrigue and world-building are top-tier, keeping you hooked until the impressive final chapter. In the end, the conspiracy is resolved.

Five Genres in One
The gameplay of Shuten Order is as varied as it is ambitious. The main loop consists of reading, investigating, and making choices across the five different routes. Each route changes the core genre, forcing you to adapt to new mechanics: one might be a classic investigation of clue gathering and interrogations in the style of Ace Attorney. Another might be an escape game with logic or sliding puzzles, and even a stealth and horror adventure, among others.
The idea is highly refreshing, preventing traditional visual novel fatigue. The major drawback, however, is that being “five genres in one”, none of them reach significant depth. The gameplay mechanics beyond the text, such as stealth or puzzles, tend to be very simplistic, acting more as intermissions. Despite this, their primary function, keeping the experience dynamic and varying the pace, is successfully achieved. Additionally, the flow chart for reviewing decisions is a lifesaver.

A Feast for the Eyes
If there is one aspect where Shuten Order shines brightly, it is its presentation. The visual style is colorful, vibrant, and instantly recognizable thanks to the character design by Simadoriru (known for The Hundred Line and Rain Code). It uses a striking and vibrant color palette, which gives it a unique and fresh identity. The character portraits are extremely expressive, and the frequent use of manga aesthetic in the dialogue boxes prevents the screen fatigue that visual novels often suffer from.
On the audio front, the soundtrack by Masafumi Takada (Danganronpa) is excellent. It combines strange and eerie pieces with electrifying rhythms, perfect for the story’s chaotic tone. The Japanese voice acting is energetic and characterful. It should be noted, however, that the game was not released with many localization options (only English and Japanese). Regarding performance on the original Switch, some users noted frame rate fluctuations in specific scenes. Nonetheless, the visual experience compensates for minor technical issues. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition improves performance significantly, pushing up to 120 frames per second.

A Stunning, Twist-filled Rollercoaster
Shuten Order is a proposition that, despite its imperfections, is fascinating. It’s a rollercoaster of ideas, mystery, and visual style that only Tookyo Games could conjure up. Its biggest success is the story. It features an engaging conspiracy, with excellent world-building and character development. Furthermore, there is a final stretch that ties up most of the loose ends. The five-genre structure maintains freshness throughout the 30-40 hours of gameplay. Unfortunately, the gameplay within each genre falls short of ambition.
In conclusion, it is a game that suffers from its execution in some segments. It is highly recommended for die-hard fans of Kazutaka Kodaka’s style. It is also recommended for anyone looking for an author-driven visual novel with a strong visual style. If you are new to the genre and seeking deep mechanics, it might be better to start elsewhere. But if you are looking for constant plot twists, interesting dialogues, and an unforgettable aesthetic, the Shuten Order awaits.
