What The Grand Theft Auto Games Mean For Netflix Games’ Big Ambitions

Netflix Games had a bunch of interesting surprises during the year 2023, but in my humble opinion I think the biggest surprise was the addition of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition to the growing catalog, so let’s talk about why this addition has set expectations for 2024.

Why This Is A Big Deal

Netflix is a large company but when it comes to video game IP they haven’t got anything in its catalog anywhere near the notoriety of Grand Theft Auto besides the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition itself. Why this is relevant is Netflix’s game library that is owned has some notable indie games like Oxenfree and notable adaptions of Netflix shows like Stranger Things. Still, they have nothing on the same level of video game popularity as Call Of Duty, Fortnite, or Grand Theft Auto.

The addition of multiple games in the Grand Theft Auto franchise also shows that Netflix has been busy making new agreements to add new games from a varied number of companies, some notable big names we’ve seen release games to Netflix this year include Sega, Ubisoft, Moonbug Entertainment and Rockstar Games.

What This Means For Netflix Cloud Gaming

Now during the months of August and September Netflix rolled out support for its cloud gaming beta in the UK, Canada, and the United States. The fact Grand Theft Auto games are on Netflix’s mobile app and could become available on Netflix Cloud Gaming is a huge possibility to me seems like enough to start thinking.

Right now the game library on Netflix’s Cloud Gaming platform is made up of indie games and in my opinion, needs at least one big game to really get the attention of Netflix Cloud Gaming, so Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy: The Definite Edition could be the draw. I will say though as a counter-argument that Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 was on Google Stadia and that wasn’t enough to keep that platform afloat.
