Why Netflix Cloud Gaming Lacks Games Based On Netflix IPs

Netflix Cloud Gaming is the cloud gaming platform within the Netflix app and has a small library when compared to other services like Xbox Cloud Gaming. In this article, we are going to go over why there aren’t any games based on Netflix’s TV or Film library, despite over twenty mobile games on Netflix Games being available.

Netflix Cloud Gaming’s Library Is Small, But Still Lacks Games Based On Their IPs

Let’s go over the first point, Netflix has two different gaming platforms, one of them is the mobile gaming platform where a majority of the games they’ve added sit. The Cloud Gaming platform within Netflix only has ten total games, however, this library of ten games includes three games published by Netflix themselves, two of which are only available via Netflix Cloud Gaming. The three games published by Netflix are Oxenfree, Underwatermelon Fruit Merge and Mole Gem Mayhem.

Obviously, of the three games we’ve just listed, only Oxenfree exists within a franchise and Netflix acquired the franchise alongside the developer Night School Studio back in 2021. But with there being a trio of games based on their popular IPs like Stranger Things and Too Hot To Handle, we have to ask why are there no games on Netflix Cloud Gaming based on their huge media franchise catalog.

Possible Reasons For The Lack Of Games

Now let’s go over the top reasons that could be a cause for the lack of games based on Netflix IPs on Netflix Cloud Gaming. The first reason we are going to go over is technical difficulties, this is based on the fact that Netflix Games has a majority of its game library designed for mobile game platforms. This theory largely comes from the fact that many games like Too Hot To Handle 3 are designed to be played in a portrait over Netflix Cloud Gaming’s landscape aspect ratio as well as the technical challenge of adding controller and keyboard and mouse support and to get a mobile game running on a more powerful cloud server. Now, there is also no evidence that Netflix’s game studios aren’t working on porting some of their games over to Netflix Cloud Gaming.

Next Games is still developing content updates for Stranger Things Puzzle Tales and recently launched Netflix Cloud Gaming’s latest game, Underwatermelon Fruit Merge. This shows there is potential for at least one game to make the jump. Boss Fight Entertainment has been hard at work developing the Netflix Stories lineup of games, which are all designed to be played in portrait mode, and seemingly won’t be bringing any of their IP games over to Netflix Cloud Gaming anytime soon. We also must factor in the fact Netflix Cloud Gaming is still in Beta, so there is less reasoning to expect a huge swath of games to be added to the platform.

Final Thoughts

Netflix Games is an interesting story, a media company which many people thought would have no interest in the gaming industry has now built up a huge library and is thriving with community run Discord’s and Reddit’s. Netflix Cloud Gaming could easily become one of the major services due to the breath of the franchises they control and its large user base. Hopefully, over the next few months we will see some games based on Stranger Things, Money Heist and Narcos drop onto Netflix Cloud Gaming.
