XBOX CEO Asha Sharma has included streaming in the company’s plan to return to audience and revenue growth by the end of fiscal year 2027. In an internal memo obtained by The Verge, Sharma grouped streaming with Windows, Game Pass, and the XBOX operating system as parts of the platform XBOX plans to use to reach new audiences and developers.
Console isn’t being pushed aside. Sharma said it remains the flagship XBOX experience and generates most of the company’s gaming revenue, while streaming supports a wider strategy for reaching people beyond dedicated hardware.
Streaming Is Part Of XBOX’s Wider Platform Strategy
Sharma’s first FY27 priority centres on strengthening the XBOX platform. Console sits at the front of that effort, while streaming, Windows, Game Pass, and the XBOX operating system support the company’s push to attract new audiences and developers.
Sharma used the broader term streaming and didn’t announce a specific XBOX Cloud Gaming feature, expansion, or usage figure. The memo instead places streamed game access within XBOX’s wider platform plans.
That builds on the access strategy we covered during XBOX’s 100-day reset. XBOX has continued to expand across console, PC, mobile devices, subscriptions, and streaming rather than tying its ecosystem to one screen.
The new memo confirms that streaming remains part of that approach, but it doesn’t explain which service improvements or platform expansions XBOX plans to pursue during FY27.
Console Still Generates Most XBOX Revenue
Sharma described console as XBOX’s flagship experience and the foundation of its audience. She also said console continues to generate most XBOX revenue, although the memo doesn’t provide a percentage or financial breakdown.
That distinction is important because XBOX isn’t presenting streaming as a replacement for dedicated hardware. Console remains the centre of the current business while the rest of the platform creates more ways for people to access XBOX games and services.
Streaming can extend that access to televisions, mobile devices, computers, and other supported screens without changing the role console currently plays in XBOX’s finances.
XBOX Targets A Return To Growth By The End Of FY27
XBOX’s immediate goal is to return to audience and revenue growth by the end of FY27 while restoring profits to industry-average levels.
Sharma said the company’s four priorities and XBOX roadmap need to begin producing meaningful audience value and faster revenue growth during FY28 and FY29. By FY30, XBOX is targeting sustained double-digit growth in audience and engagement.
XBOX currently reaches more than 100 million people each day, more than 500 million each month, and nearly one billion each year. Those are company-reported figures for the wider XBOX ecosystem and shouldn’t be treated as XBOX Cloud Gaming usage numbers.
For XBOX Cloud Gaming, this remains a strategy update rather than a service announcement. Streaming has a confirmed place in the company’s growth plan, but XBOX hasn’t shared the service changes or usage results that will indicate how much that role expands during FY27.
