Xbox Cloud Gaming Tests New Game Invitation Feature: A Step Towards Social Gaming?

Xbox Cloud Gaming appears to be making strides towards enhancing the social gaming experience with the introduction of a new game invitation feature. While details are still scarce, the feature seems to improve how players connect and interact within the cloud gaming platform.

If our understanding is correct, the game invitation feature could allow users to invite friends to join their current streaming session. This opens up exciting possibilities, particularly for local co-op games to be played together over the internet. Imagine being able to invite your friends to play a couch co-op game like LEGO Star Wars or Rayman Legends together, even if you’re physically distant.

Couch Multiplayer Gaming

This new feature echoes Amazon Luna’s “Luna Couch,” which allows multiple players to join the same session and play local co-op games simultaneously. Luna Couch has been praised for its ease of use and has proven to be a popular feature among gamers. If Xbox Cloud Gaming’s game invitation feature works similarly, it could be a game-changer for the platform.

It’s interesting to note that Xbox Cloud Gaming doesn’t even have basic couch multiplayer at this time. The experience is limited to a single controller – one of the stranger shortcomings of the service. Just about every other cloud service does allow multiple local controllers. Perhaps if “virtual” couch multiplayer support is added, “basic” multiplayer will get supported as well.

As we eagerly await more information about the new feature, it’s clear that Xbox Cloud Gaming is still committed to adding features, even those providing a more social and immersive gaming experience. The ability to invite friends to join your streaming sessions could significantly enhance the platform’s appeal and draw in a wider audience.

Kudos to Better Xcloud developer redphx on Twitter for the discovery. You can see some of the details for the strings that go with this new feature in his tweet.
