Xbox is kicking off 2026 and Xbox’s 25th anniversary with the return of the Developer_Direct broadcast, on January 22 and putting the spotlight firmly on gameplay. The showcase once again hands the mic directly to developers, offering extended looks at upcoming games rather than simple announcement trailers.
This year’s Developer_Direct is especially interesting, with two projects from Playground Games and a brand-new action RPG from Game Freak headlining the broadcast. Xbox is positioning the event as an early look at what’s coming later this year and into 2026, with a focus on how these games actually play.
Playground Games Takes Centre Stage
One of the clearest themes going into this Developer_Direct is the presence of Playground Games, which will be featured twice during the showcase.
Fable Gets Its First Extended Gameplay Showcase
Xbox is finally ready to show gameplay of Fable. Giving us the clearest look yet at how Playground’s reboot actually plays.
The studio promises a closer look at Albion. And, how the world comes together, including combat, exploration, and the choices you make along the way. Core themes like consequence-driven storytelling and British humour remain central, reimagined for a modern RPG structure designed for both returning fans and newcomers.

Forza Horizon 6 Heads to Japan
Playground Games will also debut gameplay for Forza Horizon 6, confirming Japan as the setting for the next Horizon festival.
The broadcast will include a first look at open-world driving across Japan’s landscapes. Along with new features being introduced in this installment.

Game Freak Reveals New Beast of Reincarnation Gameplay
Rounding out the show will be a deep dive into Beast of Reincarnation, a new action RPG from Game Freak.
Set in a post-apocalyptic version of Japan, the game follows protagonist Emma and her canine companion Koo in a one-person, one-dog combat experience. This Developer_Direct will mark the first time gameplay mechanics are shown in detail. This includes Emma’s plant-based abilities and how traversal, combat, and companionship work together.
It represents a notable shift for Game Freak, moving beyond its traditional design comfort zone into darker, more action-driven territory.

Developer_Direct Expectations
Xbox’s January Developer_Direct is expected to focus on extended gameplay rather than announcements. With developers walking through how Fable, Forza Horizon 6, and Beast of Reincarnation actually play.
That makes this showcase less about surprises and more about how these games will play. Watching real gameplay should make it easier to judge how big these games feel. And, how they play, and where they’re headed ahead of release.
This article will be updated after the broadcast with highlights from the broadcast. Developer_Direct airs January 22 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm GMT.
