Xbox has been one of the most well-known gaming brands for almost twenty-five years. But over the last few years, we have seen more and more games from the Xbox portfolio appear on other gaming platforms including PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. In this editorial, I want to talk about why I think these moves could help build up the cloud gaming market alongside the Xbox business.
Xbox Is A Major Publisher With Some Major Brands
What do the Forza, Halo, Call of Duty, and Fallout franchises all have in common? If you said they are all game franchises owned by Xbox, which also appear on competing cloud gaming platforms like Boosteroid and NVIDIA GeForce NOW, then you’d be correct. Xbox has also recently published several new games on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, which could lead to many of Xbox’s games appearing on the cloud gaming services that PlayStation and Nintendo eventually build.
Microsoft’s Deals Are Benefiting Everyone
Many gamers, whether they are on consoles, PC, cloud gaming, or mobile gaming, know the industry is changing as more gaming and tech companies work to build out their cloud gaming infrastructure. Microsoft signed ten-year contracts with NVIDIA, Boosteroid, PlayStation, and Nintendo to provide hit games such as Diablo and Call of Duty to their platforms. This means if gamers want to buy or play these games on those platforms, they can. We have also seen Xbox license a handful of games in the Fallout series to Amazon Luna. With the popularity of Microsoft’s game franchises continuing to grow, it benefits gamers and competing cloud gaming platforms to not only have these games in order to attract new users but also keep existing users engaged with those platforms.
This Benefits Microsoft Too!
Microsoft is also going to benefit massively from an increased audience in its multiplatform games. Sure, Microsoft’s console sales have dropped. But, who wants to to be locked to playing just on a single plastic box now anyways? PlayStation gamers may try to “stick it” to Xbox by buying Xbox Game Studios games on PlayStation instead of buying an Xbox or subscribing to Game Pass. But, Microsoft’s games will still benefit from increased sales, exposure and interest. As its games become available on more cloud gaming, PC and console platforms over the coming years the Game Pass collection practically advertises itself! The more Xbox games which have PC ports that can be played on platforms like Boosteroid and NVIDIA GeForce NOW the better – not just for Microsoft but for the other platforms and gamers alike.
