Xodus is working to bring XBOX PC and PC Game Pass games to Linux, and some of the access pieces are already functioning. The latest update surfaced in a Reddit post in the Linux Gaming community, where Xodus member Paweł Lidwin, posting as imLinguin, responded to a question about PC Game Pass on Linux. He said Xodus can now authorize access and download games, while development has shifted toward the SDK work needed for the games themselves.
That doesn’t mean you can play your PC Game Pass library locally on Linux through Xodus yet. Xodus can obtain game licences, handle logins and retrieve game packages, but additional Wine work is still needed for the XBOX services those games rely on. It’s important to note, Xodus is an unofficial effort and isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft or XBOX.
Xodus Already Handles XBOX Authorization And Game Downloads
Outside Windows, getting an XBOX PC game onto a Linux machine involves several pieces Xodus has been reverse-engineering. Its current tools support MSIXVC package downloads, XBOX authorization, device and user sign-in and licence acquisition. Separate Xodus components are being developed around the XBOX PC runtime the games depend on.
These are important steps, but they don’t yet amount to playable PC Game Pass support on Linux. Downloading the package and securing the licence gets Xodus part of the way there. The remaining challenge is making the game work with the services and runtime it expects.
Running XBOX PC Games On Linux Is The Next Challenge
The remaining compatibility work is centred on the runtime layer. Xodus maintains its own Wine and Proton forks, along with an open-source implementation of xgameruntime.dll designed for use with Xodus through Wine.
Compatibility won’t automatically cover every XBOX PC or PC Game Pass game. Xodus hopes to support most of the catalogue, with the current limit that games need to use Microsoft’s Game Development Kit and the MSIXVC package format. Gears of War 4 is specifically listed as unsupported for now.
There isn’t a release date for when this work will reach the point where PC Game Pass games can generally be played locally on Linux. For now, the sign-in, authorization, licence and download work is functional, while the runtime compatibility needed to launch games is still being developed.
Xodus Could Add Another Way To Play PC Game Pass Games
Linux users already have cloud options for some PC Game Pass games without installing the Windows versions locally. We currently track PC Game Pass games available through both GeForce NOW and Boosteroid, letting supported games run in the cloud rather than on the Linux device itself.
Xodus is pursuing local execution instead. Its goal is to get the actual XBOX PC versions running on Linux rather than streaming them from remote hardware. Cloud gaming and Xodus address different access paths, with services such as GeForce NOW and Boosteroid providing cloud access while Xodus works toward local Linux compatibility.
There’s still substantial work ahead before Xodus can turn that goal into normal PC Game Pass gameplay on Linux, and there is no confirmed timeline yet. The next milestone is getting those games to run through the runtime and Wine compatibility work already underway.
