Have you ever dreamed of sailing the high seas battling monsters and uncovering hidden treasures? I’ve got the game for you! Ys X: Nordics marks the return of the iconic action RPG series developed by Nihon Falcom and published by NIS America. This latest installment takes a fresh approach by introducing new gameplay mechanics while staying true to the series’ roots. Set in a Norse-inspired world, you join the adventurous hero Adol Christin and his new companion, Karja, as they face off against the mysterious Griegr monsters.

The game introduces ship exploration, adding a new layer to the adventure. You’ll find yourself sailing across the seas, battling enemies, and discovering hidden treasures. Just like you dreamed of! Join me as we look at what awaits across the high seas in Ys X: Nordics.

Unraveling Mysteries on the High Seas

In Ys X: Nordics, you dive into an adventure filled with mystery and excitement. The story centres around Adol Christin and his new companion, Karja. Together, they confront the Griegr, a strange and seemingly immortal monster. This partnership brings depth to the story, as you see Adol’s and Karja’s bond grow through shared challenges.

As you explore the world, you uncover secrets about the Griegr and the lore surrounding it. The game does a great job of balancing action with moments of character development. I found myself invested in not only the lives of Adol and Karja but also the lives of various NPCs, each with their own stories and quests. For instance, Ezer, a servant of Karja’s household, provides meals that boost your team’s abilities. It’s these types of interactions that make the world feel alive and full of possibilities.

The story unfolds at a steady pace, which allows you to take everything in without feeling rushed. While the main plot might not be groundbreaking, it offers enough twists and turns that kept me interested. The side quests also give you a meaningful chance to learn more about the characters and their backgrounds.

Overall, I found Ys X’s story to be enjoyable and interesting. It’s a blend of familiar themes and new elements that make it worth your time. I often found myself wondering what was next for Adol and Karja and was surprised in more ways than one on several occasions.

Sailing into Adventure

Ys X’s gameplay is a mix of both familiar and new. The biggest new feature is the ability to control both Adol and Karja at the same time. This unique dual-character system allows you to switch between either character seamlessly, allowing for dynamic combat that keeps you on your toes. For example, you might use Adol to attack while Karja blocks incoming hits, creating a rhythm that feels satisfying.

The combat itself is fast-paced and exciting. You’ll find yourself dodging enemy attacks and unleashing powerful combos. There’s something about timing your moves just right, especially when you pull off a counter-attack after being knocked back that is satisfying. There is also a new grappling mechanic, which lets you lunge toward your enemies. This adds a fun twist to battles, making each fight feel unique.

As you might have guessed, exploration in Ys X is another key element of gameplay. You travel across beautifully designed environments, searching for treasures and crafting materials. The game encourages you to explore off the beaten path, rewarding your curiosity. I loved the feeling of discovery when I stumbled upon hidden areas filled useful items.

Tied to Ys X’s exploration is ship exploration. This new gameplay mechanic starts out slow, but by upgrading your ship, it makes sailing more enjoyable. Encountering enemies on the high seas adds a different flavour to your adventures. Nihon Falcom did a great job with the mix of action, exploration, and strategy in Ys X. It kept me interested from start to finish, with what seemed like a never dull moment.

In a scene from Ys X: Nordics, Adol stands on a ship with the vast ocean and majestic mountains as their backdrop. HUD elements strategically overlay the breathtaking view, enhancing the immersive gameplay experience.

Smooth Animations Along With Fluid and Dynamic Combat

Ys X: Nordics graphics feel new and inviting. The game runs on a new engine, with slightly updated graphics that do a great job of capturing the look and feel of the anime. The colourful landscapes and beautifully designed towns each have their own charm, making it fun and enjoyable to wander around. I found myself stopping just to take it all in, especially at places like Viewpoint Isle.

The character animations are smooth and combat moves look fluid and dynamic. When you pull off a special attack, the animations really pop, making you feel powerful. The expressive character designs do a great job to bring the story to life. Even when Adol is quiet during cutscenes, you can still sense his emotions.

The soundtrack features a mix of upbeat tracks and softer melodies that the game’s mood perfectly. I often found myself humming along to the tunes while exploring. There is something about the music that makes each moment feel special. On the other hand, the voice acting in Ys X is a mixed bag. Some characters sound good, while others feel a bit off. It doesn’t ruin the experience, but it could be better.

Ys X: Nordics offers enough new features to keep things fresh while maintaining the familiar charm fans love

Ys X: Nordics brings a fresh twist to the long-running series while keeping its core elements intact. I really enjoyed the new ship exploration feature, which adds a fresh and unique twist to gameplay. Although sailing can feel slow at times, upgrading your ship makes it more enjoyable.

The combat system, allowing you to control two characters at once, makes battles feel more dynamic and exciting. All the different skills and strategies you can use with Adol and Karja working together feels limitless. The story unfolds nicely, introducing you to memorable characters and interesting side quests. While the story isn’t groundbreaking by any means, it still keeps you invested in Adol and Karia’s journey.

Visually, the game looks great, with colourful environments that draw you in. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning and complements the action and exploration beautifully. However, the voice acting is a hit or miss. Overall, I think Ys X: Nordics is a solid addition to the franchise. It offers enough new features to keep things fresh while maintaining the familiar charm fans love. If you’re a fan of action RPGs and the series, Ys X is definitely worth your time.
