Zombies Overloaded – Game Review

Zombies Overloaded

Zombies Overloaded is an arcade-inspired shooter that places players in tight quarters against a zombie horde. It is developed by the team at Vinterm Games and published by Brainium Games.

No Story, Just Zombies

Although a game like this doesn’t need one, there is no story to follow in Zombies Overloaded. The main aim for the player is to simply kill as many zombies as possible and live for as long as possible.

Gameplay takes the form of a top-down shooter. Players will enter a close-quarters arena and then meet with waves of zombie enemies. Clear that wave, and the next wave will follow. As you progress, waves will become more difficult, and every so often, a boss wave will take place. Pre warning, bosses are formidable foes!

Players can partake in two modes: Overloaded, which is your run-of-the-mill, move, shoot, kill, repeat style mode. However, for the gamers out there who want to make peace with our zombie friends, the pacifist mode is for you. This mode empowers you with only the ability of movement, no weapons, oh, and the zombies will still try to feast upon your flesh. Good luck!

Time To Load Up

Of course, when playing the overloaded game mode, it is not just you and some weak potato pop gun trying to take down the horde. Yes, players start this mode with a standard pistol, but various weapons and power-ups will spawn in the arena.

The weapons include a shotgun, assault rifle, flamethrower and even a laser gun, whilst power-ups feature items such as super speed, steroids and even a nuke. All of these items are designed to help give you that extra edge whilst trying to survive.

Bone Collector

Another key aspect of the game is progression. As you kill enemies, they will either drop ‘bones’ or gold coins that sort of resemble some form of pirate treasure. In turn, those coins can be used to make a permanent increase in your base stats. Stats such as damage, speed and health can all be upgraded.

Coins are not just used to upgrade your stats; however, they are also used to upgrade the stats for each weapon type. Adding further to this, you can also use coins to purchase new in-game maps and new player skins.

Now, coin collecting can take time, and this is where the collecting of the bones comes into play. Collected bones can be exchanged for coins, which are then used for upgrades and purchases. If you collect 100 bones, they can then be exchanged for 25 coins. I also recommend, at one point, holding a collection of 1000 bones in total; Achievement and Trophy hunters can thank me later. There are also in-game Achievements for the Nintendo Switch version of Zombies Overloaded.

Final Thoughts

My experience with Zombies Overloaded has been nothing short of a lot of fun so far. Yes, it is not the most in-depth game in the world, but it isn’t trying to be. If you are a fan of rogue-lite titles such as Brotato, then you will definitely enjoy this one.

The gameplay is solid and fun. There is definitely more than enough here to keep gamers coming back for more. I know I certainly will be.
