Amazon Luna Hires Former XBOX Brand Director Tim Coombs

Amazon Luna has hired former XBOX brand director Tim Coombs as its new Head of Brand Marketing. Coombs announced the move on LinkedIn, saying he had rejoined Amazon in the Luna role.

The appointment fills a Head of Brand Marketing position we highlighted in June while looking at Amazon Luna’s recent hiring. At the time, Amazon was looking for someone to help define Luna’s brand and how the service is presented to customers. Now Coombs is taking on that work.

Coombs Brings XBOX Brand Experience To Amazon Luna

Coombs joins Luna after serving as Director, Brand Management – Xbox at Microsoft. In an earlier LinkedIn post, he said he had resigned from XBOX and was taking a few weeks before moving into a new role.

That gives Amazon Luna a new marketing lead with recent experience working on the XBOX brand. It also lines up closely with what Amazon was seeking when it advertised the Luna marketing position earlier this summer.

The move is also a return to Amazon, which Coombs made clear in his announcement. He didn’t outline any upcoming Luna campaigns or broader brand changes, so there’s no reason yet to read the hire as a rebrand or a shift in the service itself.

For now, the change is on the marketing side. Luna has a new person leading its brand work, and he arrives with recent XBOX brand-management experience.

Amazon Had Been Hiring For A Luna Brand Marketing Lead

We covered Amazon’s search for a Head of Brand Marketing in June as part of a wider look at new Luna job listings. The role stood out because the job description focused on making Luna easier to define and recognize, including how it speaks to customers and how campaigns explain the service.

That makes Coombs’ appointment a direct follow-up to a hiring push we were already watching. Amazon was looking for someone to take a leading role in Luna’s brand marketing, and Coombs is now in that position.

His XBOX experience doesn’t tell us what Amazon will do next with Luna’s marketing. It does tell us who Amazon has chosen to lead that work.

The next thing to watch is what Coombs and Amazon actually do with the role. For now, his appointment closes the loop on a Luna hiring move we first covered in June.
