Netflix Cloud Gaming recently released a brand new horror game from the talented developers behind Oxenfree (Night School Studio), and it has me asking a question. Will Unhinged be the game to get Netflix Cloud Gaming on the map? Well, let’s talk about it.

Netflix Dominates Horror Movies, So Why Not Games?

Netflix as a business has shown that the horror movie and television series make up a huge chunk of their film and television libraries. So if Netflix is dominating horror with Stranger Things, Babysitter Killer Queen and the Fear Street franchise. Not only would Netflix have a number of interesting horror IPs that they could adapt into video games, but they also have the platform to release new horror games on Netflix Cloud Gaming and potentially tap into their over three hundred million subscribers.

Horror Games Go Viral Online

The next point I want to make is the fact that horror games go viral very easily on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Twitch. In the last decade, we have seen dozens of great horror and horror-themed games become hugely popular games thanks to online content creation: Five Nights at Freddy’s, Dead By Daylight and even Night School Studio’s previous game Oxenfree all became widely popular games or series thanks to popular content creators like Markiplier and Jacksepticeye playing them. This could be a huge way for Netflix to market its cloud gaming platform to an entire audience of Netflix users who, in many cases, may never try cloud gaming otherwise.

Netflix has used viral social media marketing campaigns for many of its films and television shows, and with games like Unhinged having a number of big content creators marketing Unhinged and Netflix’s Cloud Gaming service could lead to more Netflix subscriptions and a number of new users who grew up watching horror let’s plays on YouTube or playing horror games to try Unhinged which could lead to Netflix investing in more horror games.

Final Thoughts

Horror games have long been a huge genre for viral moments online, and for Netflix, that could be a huge draw to increase their subscribers’ knowledge of Netflix Cloud Gaming. Netflix has the talented developers at Night School Studio but also the IP and the money to develop dozens of games that could appeal to horror fans and help build up Netflix’s pedigree when it comes to game development.
