New Cloud Gaming Tech SAIL Cuts Bandwidth Use 44% And Latency 8%

Researchers say a new cloud gaming rate-control technology called SAIL cut bandwidth use by 44.27% and average end-to-end latency by 8.37%. The results came from a month-long commercial evaluation covering more than 57,000 instances of cloud play across 15 cities.

The findings are detailed in a July 13, 2026 arXiv preprint. SAIL adjusts streaming bitrate based on how much data each frame needs to maintain perceived image quality. The goal is to avoid sending extra data once a higher bitrate stops producing a noticeable visual improvement.

SAIL Cuts Unnecessary Bitrate From Cloud Gaming Streams

Cloud gaming normally has to balance image quality, network conditions and latency while encoding gameplay in real time. Increasing bitrate can improve image quality, but those improvements eventually reach a point where additional data becomes difficult to notice.

SAIL tries to identify that point for individual frames. Instead of continuing to increase bitrate toward the available network limit, it can reduce the amount of data being sent while maintaining the same perceived image quality.

The amount of bandwidth needed can also change with what is happening on screen. The researchers found that some simpler scenes could reach their target quality at around 10 Mbps. More visually complex scenes required higher bitrates.

That means SAIL is not simply applying one lower bitrate to every game or scene. It adjusts the stream based on the visual content being encoded.

The Real-World Test Covered More Than 57,000 Instances Of Cloud Play

SAIL was tested for one month on a commercial service identified in the research as the “T cloud gaming platform.” The paper does not publicly name the service.

The evaluation covered more than 57,000 instances of cloud play across 15 cities. It included both Ethernet and Wi-Fi connections, along with tens of thousands of subjective quality ratings.

Compared with the platform’s existing streaming strategy, SAIL reduced bandwidth consumption by 44.27%. Average end-to-end latency dropped by 8.37%.

The researchers also reported no reduction in perceived visual quality during the test. Average play time increased by 3.5 minutes, while severe stalls occurred less often.

Those results are tied specifically to the month-long evaluation. They should not be confused with the much larger deployment figure reported elsewhere in the paper.

Bandwidth Can Account For Up To 60% Of Cloud Gaming Costs

Bandwidth is also a major operating expense on the platform studied.

The researchers say bandwidth represents between 30% and 60% of total operating costs on the commercial platform. Cutting unnecessary bitrate could therefore reduce one of the larger expenses involved in delivering cloud gaming at scale.

That cost range applies to the platform in the research. It should not be treated as an estimate for every cloud gaming service.

SAIL has also moved well beyond the month-long evaluation. The researchers say the technology has now supported more than 20 million instances of cloud play.

The 44.27% bandwidth and 8.37% latency figures were not measured across all 20 million. Those results come from the smaller commercial evaluation.

The wider deployment shows that SAIL has already moved beyond a research test and is being used at substantial commercial scale.
