PlayStation’s QSSR AI Upscaling Arrives on PS5 and PlayStation Cloud Gaming

PlayStation’s new QSSR AI upscaling has arrived on PS5 and on PlayStation Cloud Gaming. We confirmed QSSR remains available in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei when played through PlayStation Cloud Gaming. In both games, it works the same way as when playing locally on a standard PS5.

PlayStation introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution on October 1 as a new AI upscaling option built specifically for PS5. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first two games to use it. Both games support PlayStation Cloud Gaming on PS5 and PlayStation Portal with PlayStation Plus Premium.

QSSR Brings AI Upscaling to the Standard PS5

QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, PlayStation’s graphics collaboration with AMD. It uses a lighter neural network and a PS5-specific implementation to bring AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5.

PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, brought AI image reconstruction to PS5 Pro. Its computing demands kept the same approach off the standard PS5. QSSR reduces those demands enough to bring some of the same image-reconstruction benefits to PS5.

PSSR remains the more advanced option on PS5 Pro. QSSR brings improvements to image detail and image stability to the standard PS5.

Marvel’s Wolverine uses QSSR by default on PS5 after update 1.002.000, improving image detail and stability. Ghost of Yōtei also received QSSR on October 1 as an additional graphics option.

When we covered Project Amethyst and the next PSSR upgrade in July 2025, the cloud gaming connection was still a future possibility. That work was limited to PS5 Pro.

QSSR Could Expand Across More PS5 Games

QSSR gives developers a new way to improve image detail and stability on the standard PS5 using AI-based upscaling. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first two examples, but PlayStation plans to make the technology broadly available to developers.

That could make QSSR increasingly common across PS5 games as more studios begin using it. Instead of AI image reconstruction remaining largely associated with PS5 Pro and PSSR, standard PS5 games now have their own option.

For PlayStation Cloud Gaming, that also means the benefits of QSSR can be part of the experience whenever supported PS5 games are available through the service.
